As you may know sometimes you have to tweak your diet if you hit a plateau and these recipes will help you on both a low carb diet or a calorie deficit diet.
But first here are some ideas of things you can do instead of eating. If you just want the low calorie recipes click here.
THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF EATING.
Here are a few dieting ideas I came up with to help you find things to do instead of eating. For me I get a lot of food noise or sometimes it’s emotional eating. Be it nervousness, boredom, etc. I want to reach for food to soothe me. Here are some ideas of what you can do instead of eating when you aren’t really hungry.
1. Change your thinking by doing something creative.

Recently I have be doing some drawing and painting that I’m excited about. It’s my newest hobby and I get so many ideas from Instagram. Here are a few more ideas to spark your creativity. I know I’m not very good but I’m enjoying learning something new. The key is to try and proud of that.
- Pick up a new hobby like crocheting, knitting, sewing, watercolors, coloring books, painting, woodwork, pottery, gardening, needlepoint, calligraphy, hand lettering, repurposing furniture or clothes, write a short story, write a poem, start a blog, photography, etc. As I mentioned above I just started trying my hand at drawing and something called Zentagle.
- Learn more about your hobby on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Facebook as so many groups and pages about specific hobbies and you can learn quite a lot through other people. I like Instagram for inspiration and I follow lots of people who draw and do watercolors because that interests me. These people really inspire me so I save posts and try to learn from them. Also many people have free classes on their Youtube channels.
2. Escape to somewhere new to get your mind off food.
When I don’t feel like being creative and I’ve already worked out I like to escape with a good book or movie. Reading is a great escape and you can do it just about anywhere. Also I enjoy researching new places for family vacations.

- Read a book and escape to a new world, time period or just learn about another culture. I LOVE to read and have a Kindle Unlimited subscription. You can take out 20 Kindle books at a time as well as magazines. It’s a great way to try out different authors or learn about new hobbies (like Zentangle). I even take out travel books, cookbooks, health related books etc.
- Or go to the library and take out books of interest to you. You can also get books on tape if you aren’t into reading. Put on your headphones and go walking or ride a stationary bike as you listen to a good book. Libby is an app that I use for both ebooks and audiobooks. It hooks into your library and it’s free.
- Watch a new tv series or a movie. There are so many options on tv for you to escape but also to learn new things. Watch a documentary or travel series. Get inspired to go a vacation or remodel your home. Learn to cook new healthy meals. Or just binge watch a new series.
3. Get active and move your body.

I know sometimes the thought of exercising instead of eating sounds unappealing but one of the best habits I’ve adopted was eating lunch or dinner after I’ve worked out. I like the reward of eating and I don’t eat as much because I feel so good for having exercised.
- If you are an emotional eater, sometimes exercise is your best friend. Taking a walk can calm your mind as well as your body. Try to take in your surroundings and breathe fresh air. Walk your dog, listen to an audio book or podcast while you do it or even call a friend. Walking can lower anxiety and it’s one of the best exercise you can do.
- Find an exercise that you will enjoy. One of the best things I have learned to do over the years is find a type of exercise that I enjoy so it’s not a chore. I like to lift weights and bought a Tonal machine for my home 5 years ago and it’s the best investment I have ever made. I don’t have much patience for cardio and have always preferred weight machines. I love all that it offers me and especially that I can do it at home. Here is $250 off* if you are interested in buying one.
- But you don’t need a machine to exercise. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do and it costs nothing. Grab a friend for accountability as well as companionship and start walking regularly. Or join a gym near home or work. You can also browse through YouTube or Instagram for inspiration. There are many yoga, Zumba, or dance classes on there. Download apps like 7 minute workout. I guarantee you will feel better after a workout or even a 15 minute walk around the block.
4. Self care and connect with others.
Sometimes taking care of yourself feels indulgent and that is probably when you should do it the most. But self care can take different forms. Connecting with your body, connecting with like minded people or family and friends are some ways. Or grab a notebook and connect with yourself.

- Come up with your own tried and true ways and dealing with eating issues. Just like it’s great to keep recipe and meals that keep you on track with your diet, it’s good to have a list of ideas that help you keep on tract mentally and emotionally. Make sure to write it down so you can come back and look at it whenever you’re having that food noise in your head.
- Grab your phone and call a loved one or friend. Reach out on Facebook to a relative or classmate you haven’t talked to in years. Volunteer at your church or community to connect with others. These things will definitely get your mind and heart on other things than food.
- Join a club. These are great way to volunteer or make new like minded friends. If you like to read, join a book club. If you like biking or hiking or just about anything you can find a club for it. Again Facebook is a good place to find even local clubs. In the same vein you can also take a class or lessons. Be it language lessons, painting or learning to play the piano. You can learn a new skill and make new friends.
- Lastly do some pampering instead of eating. Take a hot bath with epsom salts and essential oils. Play soothing music or light candles. Go swimming and feel the water as it moves over you body and let it soothe you. Learn to meditate to still your mind. Just the act of washing your face, brushing your teeth, putting on lotions and caring for your body is soothing. Do some stretches or yoga to release the tension in your body. Hug a loved one or cuddle with your pet. Put on some music and dance for 5 minutes. All these things are good for self care.
- Start a journal and write down all your emotions. As I mentioned above make lists of ways to tackle hard situations. Write down your feelings instead of eating them. Keep track of what sets you off your path. Or plan your next trip. You can also write down your bucket list or goals for the year. Sometimes looking back at a journal you can see how far you’ve come in other ways besides the scale.
And now that I’ve given you some ideas for escaping that food noise and cravings. Here a those 75 low calorie recipes for you to try.
