My family loves Mexican food and we eat it quite a lot. So I’ve made quite a few low carb versions of our favorite Mexican dishes over the years. Below is a list of most of them and these 54 low carb Mexican recipes range from drinks, soups, salads to main and side dishes.
But first I have a few pointers for you if you are going out to eat at a Mexican restaurant and want to keep to your low carb or keto diet. But try one of the keto Mexican recipes on this list and you will see how easy some of them are to make yourself and you’ll save yourself some money too!
What to eat at a Mexican restaurant if on a low carb diet.
When I do go to a Mexican restaurant I tend to get fajitas and just eat that as is. No tortillas, chips, rice or beans which are all high in carbs.
- concentrate on proteins – Chicken, pork, beef and shrimp are all low carb though how they season it them may add a few carbs. Don’t go for anything that might be deep fried though.
- fill up on veggies – That’s why I like fajitas as the onions, peppers and protein are all pretty low carb. Taco salads are good too. Just don’t eat the shell.
- Since tortillas are a no go you might be able to ask them to skip the tortilla and use a lettuce wrap for tacos or burritos. Not many places do that but scan the menu and see or it doesn’t hurt to ask.
- many condiments are low carb – Guacamole, sour cream, cheese, pico de Gallo, hot sauce, etc are low in carbs so order those along side if you want more flavor. Even the salsa is pretty low in carbs but you can’t eat the chips so keep that in mind.
- skip the margaritas and fancy drinks – Margaritas are usually loaded with sugar and the alcohol can slow the digestion. You can make low carb margaritas at home though! (keto strawberry margarita or this keto pineapple margarita recipe.)
