It’s lenten season and my family looks forward to fish Fridays. They tend to favor deep fried breaded fish whereas I am looking for a low carb option at dinner time. So I came up with these easy keto fish tacos.
I made crispy air fryer tilapia fillets and wrapped them in these extremely good low carb tortillas I found. More about that later. Then I topped them with a creamy purple slaw, avocado and fresh jalapenos. The flavors went so well with the fried tilapia.
These mini tacos were so fresh and delicious! So if you are a fan of delicious fish tacos, you have to give these low carb mini tacos a try.
Recipe ingredients I used.
For the actually fried fish I used tilapia loins, pork panko, garlic powder, chili powder, cayenne powder and parmesan cheese.
As for the rest of the taco I bought these Carb Counter street taco tortillas that are FABULOUS! And from there you just add your favorite toppings. If you don’t want to buy these check your grocery store for low carb tortillas to make this soft taco. Or try making a cheese taco shell to make a hard one.
The tilapia loins are sometimes harder to find than tilapia filets. If you look at the picture below you can see that they are thicker than filets and are easier to use for this purpose. However you could also use cod or another mild white fish as long as they are firm fish fillets.
And pork panko is just crushed pork rinds. You can buy a bag and grind them in a food processor. I like the jar because it eliminates one step and they come in use for those on low carb diets.
The best keto tortillas you can buy!
I was so surprised at how good these Carb Counter street taco keto tortillas tasted. I bought 6 packs on Amazon and froze them. I take a pack out of the freezer the night before I want to use them.
They taste just like regular tortillas but they have 0g net carbs! It’s crazy.
They are also the perfect size (4 inches) for these mini tacos. You can put one small piece of fried fish and toppings to make a rather filling taco.
How to make mini keto fish tacos.
Step 1: Take a tilapia loin and cut it into 4 pieces as shown below. You can sprinkle a little salt and black pepper over them if you want.
Step 2: In a medium sized shallow bowl, mix the pork rinds, parmesan and seasoning to make the breading for fish.
Step 3: Get a baggie out and place the mayonnaise inside. Place a couple pieces of fish into the baggie and squish it around with your hands to coat each piece.
Step 4: Take a piece out and roll around into the breadcrumbs making sure to coat with pork panko mixture on all sides. Place them one by one onto a plate or baking sheet.
Step 5: Preheat the air fryer for 3-4 minutes at 380°F. Once preheated, take out the basket and spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place the fish into the basket and air fryer for 10-12 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Note cooking times may differ depending on how big or thick you fish pieces are.
Step 6: Let cool and then place 1 piece per tortilla. From there you can top with any of your favorite taco toppings. I’ve listed a few ideas for you below. (Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.)
If you don’t have an air fryer.
If you don’t have an air fryer, never fear. Just get out a deep skillet and heat up about ½ inch of oil over high heat. Add the fish and turn it down to medium heat. Cook until browned on each side.
Place on a piece of paper towel when done to absorb some of the excess oil. While this is just as easy as the air fryer, I like that you don’t have to use so much oil with the air fryer. However if you don’t have one, the skillet will work just fine.
What to put on your low carb fish tacos.
Below you can see the purple cabbage slaw and various toppings I used for my mini tacos. The purple slaw is just like my cucumber slaw with margarita dressing.
I just sliced some red onion and purple cabbage very thin. Then I mixed roughly â…“ cup mayo with 1 tablespoon lime juice and 1 teaspoon of sweetener. You could also use other kinds of cabbage or just green cabbage but I like the color of purple.
Mix and taste to see if it’s to your liking. It should have a creamy sweet and sour taste. Then mix it with the cabbage and refrigerate to soften while you make your tacos.
Other fish taco toppings to try are:
- sliced avocado
- fresh jalapeno slices or pickled jalapenos
- fresh cilantro or parsley
- shredded lettuce
- thinly sliced bell peppers, diced tomatoes or chopped green onion
- sour cream
- shredded cheese
- hot sauce for extra kick
- cilantro crema or other creamy sauce
- pickled red onions
- guacamole or low carb salsa
- or try this keto avocado lime coleslaw
You don’t even need to eat these as tacos. You can just serve the tender pieces of fried fish with a side of slaw for Tex Mex type of dinner. The low carb fish breading is very flavorful and crispy.
Well I hope you enjoy these yummy, crispy keto fish tacos. You’ll love the fresh flavor of this simple dinner.
And give those low carb tortillas a try. They are definitely my favorite low carb products I’ve ever bought! Enjoy!
