I love coffee flavored drinks, especially in the summer. That’s why I decided to make this keto espresso martini. It’s my low carb version of the classic cocktail which is sweet and has that delicious coffee flavor with a hint of vanilla vodka.
Now I do not have an espresso machine so I found a couple creative ways to make this low carb cocktail. And because I’m a big fan of Torani sugar free syrups I used their coffee flavored one to enhance it even more.
All in all this a great drink for a summer party for all of you coffee lovers and for those that like a caffeinated cocktail. And best of all for me and anyone on a low carb diet, it’s sugar free and no carbohydrates!
Recipe ingredients I used.
You only need 3 simple ingredients to make this keto beverage – espresso coffee, Absolut vanilla vodka and Torani sugar free coffee syrup. A traditional espresso martini uses espresso, vodka and coffee liqueur which has a high sugar content and therefore carbs whereas my version does not.
Espresso Coffee
I do not have an espresso machine so I bought this Starbucks ground coffee (or coffee beans). If you have an espresso machine you can use that and I’m sure it would be even better but I found this coffee to work well. I’ll give you a few more options below.
Absollut Vanilla Vodka
I like this brand of alcohol and flavor of vodka because it adds that vanilla flavor that goes well with this drink and because Absolut flavored vodkas do not have zero carbs. You can use regular vodka and it will be fine. And you can add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to add a bit more flavor.
If you want to make this into a mocktail just substitute the vodka with water, though that would essentially make this into a chilled coffee drink.
Torani Sugar Free Coffee Syrup
This is a key ingredient for this keto cocktail and you can find it many coffee shops or online. It has delicious coffee flavor and sweetness. If you have another brand of sugar free syrup go ahead and use that. Otherwise you will have to use your sweetener of choice or a simple syrup if you have that on hand.
To make a sugar free simple syrup.
Add 1 cup granular or powdered sweetener to 1 cup of water in a small sauce pan. Bring to a simmer and whisk until sweetener has dissolved. Let cool completely then pour into a container and refrigerate until ready to use. Use the same amount as the Torani syrup.
More espresso alternatives to use.
I made these again for cold brew coffee and they tasted the same to me. So if you don’t have access to espresso here are few more products to try.
- Instant Coffee Powder – This is very similar to espresso powder but it isn’t as concentrated as espresso powder. However you don’t want to use more because it can make your drink more bitter.
- Brewed Coffee – You can use regular coffee if you want. Go for a dark roast coffee. That is essentially what I did with the cold brew I bought the second time. It was still very delicious.
- Starbucks Chilled Espresso – If you can find this already made bottle it would work perfectly as you don’t need to mess with hot water and it’s already cold. However I could not find it near me. The ones at my grocery store were already flavored so they weren’t low carb.
- Nitro Cold Brew – This cold brew is infused with nitrogen. When you open it, it creates a creamy texture which would go great with this drink.
- Instant Espresso Powder – This is better than the instant coffee powder but again I couldn’t find it.
- Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate – This is another great product if you can find it. I know Trader Joes sometimes sells it.
How to make a keto espresso martini.
- Depending whether or not you have to make the coffee, go ahead and make it and refrigerate until it’s chilled. If you are use cold brew you are already set to go!
- Add the chilled coffee, Torani syrup and vodka to a cocktail shaker cup. Mix well and taste. If you want it sweeter or stronger, adjust as appropriate. If you don’t have a martini shaker you can use a mason jar and shake it in that!
- Next add a few ice cubes, shake real hard and pour into a martini glass or cocktail glass. The shaking will produce the foam on top. This is where the nitro brew might work well with this drink.
- Serve or top with whipped cream if you wish or even add a bit of heavy cream for a creamy version. You can use coffee beans for garnish if you have them. Please scroll down for the printable recipe card.
Ways to add extra flavor twist to this keto drink.
Just like you would if you were making a coffee drink you can flavor this delicious keto cocktail in many ways with additional ingredients. If you prefer a creamier drink, add a bit of heavy cream or coconut cream if you are dairy free.
Dark chocolate cocoa powder would also be a nice addition. I like to use Divine cocoa powder for a richer flavor than regular cocoa powder.
You can also add flavor extracts for a different flavor. To make an espresso mint martini add a bit of mint extract. Try other extracts like hazelnut, caramel, etc.
Lastly you can use a different sugar free syrup. Torani makes an Irish cream sugar free syrup which tastes like Irish cream liqueur. Any coffee house type of sugar free syrup will work.
