There is something about cold weather that makes me crave oranges. I love the bright scent and flavor. So today I made a Ninja Creami keto creamsicle ice cream which has both the orange and creamy vanilla flavors. It is my new favorite one! I know I say this all the time but this one of the creamiest protein ice creams and the flavor tastes like the classic treat.
These protein ice cream recipes are great when you want something sweet but are trying to stay on a low carb or any kind of healthy diet. I used a little sugar free orange jello to give the recipe a good texture and flavor. And the vanilla flavored protein powder helps to create that creamsicle flavor.
So the final outcome is a delicious treat that has a creamy, rich and wonderful flavorful. Plus it only has 188 calories, 1 gram net carbs and 14.8 grams of protein. it makes the perfect after dinner treat or dessert for those on a keto diet. And just look at the color!
What is a Ninja Creami ice cream machine?
The Ninja Creami machine is wonderful for making frozen treats and especially good for those on a low carb or sugar free diet. It can make ice cream, sorbets, gelato, smoothies and milkshake. You make the base mixture and have to freeze them overnight but you then use the machine and you have ice cream (or whatever you want) in about 5 minutes.
Regular ice cream makers require you to use a frozen bowl that you pour your liquid mixture in and then let churn for 30 minutes. The Ninja Creami starts with a frozen pint of the base mixture and then grinds it into a smooth and creamy ice cream in minutes.
Now I’m sure you can make this in a regular ice cream machine but if you are an ice cream lover I HIGHLY suggest checking out the Ninja Creami ice cream maker. Whoever invented this machine I want to thank you because you have changed my life. It makes the most delicious keto desserts!
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
The keto friendly ingredients I used to make this orange creamsicle ice cream were almond milk, cream, orange jello mix, orange extract, and protein powder.
Unsweetened Almond Milk and Heavy Cream
I used both unsweetened almond milk and heavy whipping cream for the base of this ice cream. The almond milk balances out the heaviness of the cream. If you want you can just use the almond milk, a low carb milk alternative or even try coconut milk or coconut cream as dairy free options.
Orange Sugar Free Jello Mix
Most of my healthy Ninja Creami recipes use sugar free pudding as a secret ingredient to help create a creamy texture. However today I used sugar free Jello. You can use any brand you want but the Jello is necessary. You can even play around with different flavors. This adds both sweetness, orange juice flavor and helps the consistency so you can’t really skip it.
You could use unflavored gelatin but you would have to use added sweetener and orange flavor. You might want to use orange food coloring too if you use unflavored gelatin.
Orange Extract
I wanted to increase the orang flavor and so use this flavor extract. If you don’t have it you don’t have to go out and buy it. You could substitute with orange zest if you want. Otherwise the jello will add enough orange flavor.
IsoPure Low Carb Vanilla Protein Powder
This is one of my favorite brands of protein powder because it’s low carb and I like the flavor. You can however use any kind of low carb protein powder you want. It adds flavor, sweetness and protein. If you eliminate it you might have to add more sweetener.
How to make Ninja Creami keto creamsicle ice cream.
Note this recipe makes a pint of ice cream.
Step 1: Take ½ cup of almond milk pour it into a small microwave safe medium bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes until it’s hot and then add the jello mix. Whisk well to combine and until the gelatin is dissolved.
Step 2: In a blender add the rest of the almond milk, heavy cream, protein powder and orange extract. Blend ingredients for a few seconds then add the almond milk and jello blended mixture.
Blend well to combine and then pour into the Ninja Creami pint container. Place the lid on and freeze overnight. Make sure to place on a flat surface in the freezer so it’s freezes evenly.
Step 3: The next day take off the lid of the pint container and place it into the outer bowl assembly and attach the outer bowl lid. Place into the Ninja Creami machine and hit the Lite Ice Cream button.
When done, take the outer bowl lid off and check the consistency. Chances are good you have to run it through 2-3 times until it’s nice and creamy. This is what it looked like after 1 cycle. You can see it’s powdery.
Step 4: Place again in the outer bowl assembly and run through the machine 2-3 times until nice and creamy. Below is what it looked like after 2 cycles for me but sometimes it takes 3. I always use the Lite function when I make these low carb recipes.
If it’s powdery after 2 cycles add a tablespoon of almond milk or cream and run it through again and it should be fine.
Step 5: When you get it to the texture you want, spoon into bowls and enjoy! When done put the lid on the container and store in the freezer. When you want to eat it again you will have to run it through the machine just like you did the first time.
I usually get 2-3 servings out of these containers. This keto orange creamsicle ice cream was SO good and tasty. You would never know it was a healthy guilt free treat. Please scroll down the view the printable recipe card.
Tip: You might want to order extra pint containers. I have 4 now and so I always have a few flavors to pick from in my freezer.

Ninja Creami Keto Creamsicle Ice Cream
This keto creamsicle ice cream is made in the Ninja Creami and is absolutely delicious. Smooth, creamy and also low calorie, high protein and sugar free. A delicious keto treat for those with a sweet tooth on a low carb diet.
Ingredients
- 0.3 ounce box of sugar free orange gelatin mix
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder ( I used Isopure)
- 1 teaspoon orange extract
- 1 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- In a microwave safe bowl, add ½ cup of almond milk and place in the microwave. Heat for about 1 minute until almost boiling. Add the sugar free jello and whisk for a few minutes until the gelatin dissolves.
- Pour the remaining almond milk, cream, protein powder and orange extract into the blender and blend for a few seconds to combine. Then add the orange gelatin mixture and blend for a few seconds until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into a pint container that came with the Ninja Creami. Attach the lid on pint and place in the freezer overnight. Make sure you put it on a level surface so it freezes flat on top.
- When ready to eat, pull the pint from freezer and take off the storage lid. Place in the outer bowl assembly and attach that lid assembly.
- Place in the Ninja Creami machine and hit the LITE ice cream function. When it's done, check the texture. If it's powdery, place back in the outer bowl assembly and run through the LITE cycle again. When done check to see if you like the texture. If it's still not creamy run it through the LITE cycle one more time. If you still feel it's not smooth enough you can also add a tablespoon of almond milk between runs. For me it only took 2 runs.
- Spoon into bowl and enjoy. This should make 2 good size servings. If you have leftovers, store in the container it came with along with the lid and place in freezer. You will have to run it throught the machine again when you want to eat it.

Lisa
Can I use sugar free vanilla instant vanilla pudding instead of sugar free orange jello? I live in a small town and couldn’t find it. I have orange extract and all other ingredients.
Denise
Hi Lisa, I don’t think it will taste as good to be honest. It will be more like vanilla ice cream with some orange flavor which will probably still taste good but not like a creamsicle. Another thing you can try is using a sugar free orange drink mix like single serving sugar free orange koolaid. That will have the sweet and tart taste like the jello. You would then want to use a tablespoon of vanilla pudding to make it thicker. Hope that made sense and please let me know if you have any more questions.
Denise
Lisa
Thank you! I actually found sugar free orange jello at our Family Dollar Store. Made the recipe just as written, and it is one of my new favorites! Thank for the Orange Koolaid option too. I will definitely try that the next time I struggle to find sugar free orange jello.
Denise
So glad you liked it Lisa! I want to try it with other jello flavors next.
Jeannie
I just want to clarify, are you sure it’s 2 tablespoons of sugar free jello. That’s pretty much 2 small boxes of Jello. Each box contains just over a tablespoon with the sugar free.
Denise
Hi Jeannie, I think originally I did use 2 tablespoons but really one 0.3 ounce box of sugar free jello mix will work. I’ve changed the recipe. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I hope you like it!
Jim
if I didn’t want to use the protein powder due to the slight after taste should I change anything else ?
Denise
Hi Jim, I would add a bit more sweetness (1 tablespoon sweetener) and a little vanilla extract (1/2 teaspoon) because the protein powder has both. You can taste it before you freeze it and see if it is sweet enough. You want it to be a little more sweeter than you normally would like something because I find the freezing aspect dulls it a bit. I hope that made sense and that you like it!
Monika
Will this turn out properly with 1/4 cup coconut cream in place of the HWC? Thanks! God bless.
Denise
Hi Monika, yes I think it will. It might have a slight coconut flavor but I really doubt it. I hope you like it.
Monika
Thanks for replying. I have another question, which I hope you can answer even though you don’t own a Dash (one pint) ice-cream maker. Do you think this mixture would churn and set up in that? It’s regular ice-cream machine (basically), but smaller. (This is what I have: https://bydash.com/products/my-pint-ice-cream-maker) Thanks for your help!
Oh and would this work with beef isolate protein powder or hemp protein?
Denise
Hi Monika,
Let’s see.
1. I have a dash ice cream maker and it will probably work and taste good but I’m not sure about the consistency. The Ninja Creami is very different in the way it works from regular ice cream makers. I can make just about anything creamy. But a regular machine should work.
2. The beef isolate protein powder … does that gel or is it basically a unflavored protein powder? If you are substituting either for the protein part of this recipe you can however I would suggest using more sweetener and maybe some vanilla extract. If the beef isolate gels, I would not use that because you are using the orange jello mix and I think it will be too much.
Hope that helps!
Mike Mealey
Ours turned out very grainy. Maybe from the protein powder?
Denise
Hi Mike, I’m not sure? Did you heat the almond milk to dissolve the gelatin? Also did you use a blender to combined everything? I know protein powder sometimes clumps unless you use a blender but that’s all I can think of. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you.
