I keep seeing these viral smash burger tacos on Instagram and have been dying to try them. However today I was in the mood for a gyro and though I could make a low carb version and came up with these keto gyro smash burger tacos.
My husband loved these as did I. The burgers have so much flavor and were a perfect options for gyro meat. The keto flour tortillas were also a great substitute for pita or naan bread. And then we just used the type toppings of tzatziki sauce, lettuce and tomatoes.
Plus I love make these in a skillet. They only take a few minutes to make so I will definitely be eating more smash burger tacos in the future. It’s a super easy low carb, high protein dinner that everyone love.
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used for these Greek smash tacos were ground beef, fresh garlic cloves, onions, low carb flour tortillas and a Greek seasoning blend (salt, black pepper, marjoram, oregano, rosemary and cumin).
Ground Beef
I used an 85% lean ground beef because I like the flavor of burgers with a little more fat. However they shrink quite a bit so if you want to use leaner ground beef go right ahead. If you have ground lamb that would also be great and ground turkey could work too. But hamburger meat is the easiest to find.
Low Carb Tortillas
I love these La Banderita tortillas. I bought a big order of them on Amazon and keep them in the freezer for recipes like this. you want to use the smaller low carb flour tortillas you can find and these are small street taco tortillas. To me these are the perfect size. But you could use a bigger size if you want. Note I have not tried these with corn tortillas because they are higher in carbs and don’t taste like pita bread.
Spices from Seasoning Mix
To give the ground meat the savory flavors of a gyro I used salt, black pepper, cumin, oregano, rosemary, and ground marjoram. You probably have most of these seasonings in your pantry but the marjoram is a little unusual. If you can’t find it or don’t have it you can substitute with a bit of thyme and or basil or just eliminate it.
Fresh Garlic and Onion
I would definitely use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder and while I used a yellow onion you can use white onion or even red onion if that is all you have.
Gyro Toppings
I used a store bought tzatziki sauce I found at Aldi. You can make your own with Greek yogurt, cucumbers, garlic and olive oil. Sometimes people put herbs such as fresh dill, mint, parsley in it.
Aldi had 3 different types of tzatziki where some had dill and another had artichokes! They were special items though. In a pinch you just use some sour cream or even Greek yogurt if you wanted and mix in some chopped or grated cucumber and fresh parsley if you have them.
I also used fresh chopped tomatoes or chopped iceberg lettuce.
How to make keto gyro smash burger tacos.
Step 1: Get out the food processor and add the garlic cloves and onion. Chop until finely minced. Then add in the spices and pulse a couple times to well combine.
Step 2: Next add the raw meat and pulse once or twice to mix the herb mixture into the ground beef. You can also put the ground beef into a big bowl and spoon the herb and onion mixture on top and use your hands to gently incorporate it with the meat.
Step 4: Depending on the size of your tortillas, take some of the gyro meat and form into a ball and place on the tortillas.I got 8 small portions for my small tacos out of 1 pound of ground beef. Then smash the burger balls down and try to get them to the edge of the tortilla like below.
Note the beef patties will shrink a bit when you cook them so make sure to make the patties thin and as close to the edge as you can.
Step 5: Heat up a nonstick skillet to medium heat. (If you have a stovetop grill or griddle it would work great for these because of the large flat surface but I do not have one.) Place the smash burger meat side down in the hot skillet or hot griddle and cook for 1-2 minutes. That is all that should take for it to cook. Press down with a sturdy spatula while it cooks to brown it.
Then flip it over and cook the tortilla side for 1-2 minutes. You really don’t need any cooking spray or oil if you use a nonstick pan. The grease from the meat with be sufficient. Cook time will vary depending on the size of tortilla. It only took me 2-3 minutes total for each one.
Step 6: Repeat the above step until all your smash burger tacos are done. If you have a griddle this will go much faster but even with just a skillet it takes about 10 minutes to do them all.Below you can see what mine looked like. I just placed them on a baking sheet so you could see them easily.
When they are all done you can serve on a platter with some diced and juicy tomatoes and some shredded lettuce. Also add the tzatziki sauce on the side. Let everyone make their own. Of course you could use other toppings like feta cheese or sliced onions, olives etc. Anything you would put on a gyro. I don’t think typical burger toppings like American cheese or even cheddar cheese would be appropriate for these.
While these would be the perfect low carb quick lunch, we had them for dinner. You could serve them with a green salad a vegetable to make a complete meal, they were filling as is. Store leftovers in an airtight container. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.

These easy and delicious keto gyro smash burger tacos are the perfect way to get your Greek food and Mexican food cravings all in one. With just a few spices you can create gyro flavored burgers and cook them in literally just a few minutes on the stove.
Ingredients
- 8 low carb flour tortillas (4 ยฝ inch street taco size)
- 1 pound ground beef
- ยผ cup onion, finely minced
- 4 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground marjoram
- 1 teaspoon rosemary, crushed or ground
- ยฝ teaspoon cumin
- ยฝ cup diced tomatoes
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- tzatziki sauce to taste
Instructions
- Place the onion and garlic into a food processor and pulse until finely minced. Next add the spices and pulse a few times to combine. Lastly add the ground meat and pulse just a few times to mix the onion and spice mixture with the beef. Alternatively you can do this all in a big bowl but just don't overwork the meat to get the spices combined or it it will become tough.
- Lay out tacos on a baking tray or platter. Make 8 burger balls and place each one onto a tortilla. Smash the meat down and then use your fingers to spread the meat mixture towards the edges. The fattier the meat means it will shrink so keep that in mind. Also I got 8 small tacos with my La Banderita zero carb street taco tortillas. If you use aa larger size you will probably get 4 smash burgers from this recipe.
- Heat up a nonstick skillet to medium heat. (Note if you have a stovetop grill or griddle it would work great for these but I do not have one.) Then place one of the tacos meat side down in the skillet or griddle and cook for 1-2 minutes. it doesn't take long. Push down with a spatula or spoon while cooking to get the meat cooked evenly in the skillet. Then flip over and cook the tortilla side for just 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Take out and place on a platter. Continue with all of the smash burgers.
- I places all of my tacos on a platter with a container of tzatziki sauce, diced tomatoes and shredded lettuce so everyone could make there onw gyro. Just fold like you would a taco and add your toppings. Store leftovers in separate airtight containers. Enjoy!
