Recipe ingredients and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used for this recipe were cooking spray, premade flatbread, cooked chicken, barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, fresh jalapeños, red onions and fresh cilantro which was optional.
- Barbecue Sauce – I let my husband pick out his favorite barbecue sauce at Aldi and below you can see what he picked. You can use whatever you favorite bread of BBQ sauce is.
- Premade Flatbread – I buy Aldi’s flatbread all the time. They come 2 to a package and they are delicious. You could make your own flatbread, buy another brand or sometimes I used Aldi naan bread. All work great for this recipe.
- Cheese – I used a combination of shredded mozzarella cheese and cheddar cheese. I like the mozzarella because it melts so well and the shredded cheddar for color and added flavor. Other types of cheeses you can try are pepper jack, gouda, cheese blends, Swiss or really any of your favorite cheeses.
- Cooked Chicken Breasts – This is a good recipe to use leftover chicken chicken or rotisserie chicken. I often buy a few rotisserie chickens from Costco, clean off the meat and freeze portions for recipes like this. You can also buy precooked chicken slices. You can also buy precooked chicken slices or use leftover pulled bbq chicken.
- Red Onions and Jalapeño Peppers – I like red onion slices for flavor and color. You can use white onions, yellow or even chopped green onions if you wish. And the jalapeño peppers are the perfect addition for bbq pizza but if you don’t have any you can try sweet bell pepper or skip them altogether. Or you can try pickled jalapeno peppers (this is my husbands awesome recipe.)
- Cilantro – I like the color and flavor of using fresh cilantro leaves as a garnish for this dish. But many people don’t like the flavor so you can skip it or substitute with fresh parsley.
Other things you can use on this flatbread is hot pepper flakes for a little heat, hot sauce, a drizzle of ranch dressing, bacon bits, shredded lettuce, black olives, etc.
How to make bbq chicken flatbread.
This is how to make bbq chicken flatbread using Aldi flatbread and many common ingredients you probably already have at home. Remember Aldi naan bread is a good substitution for the flatbread.
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425°F and spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place the flatbread on the baking sheet and spray the edges with the cooking spray or brush the edges with olive oil if you prefer.
Step 2: Spread 4 tablespoons of the bbq sauce over the bread base going out to towards the corners in a thin layer.
Step 3: Take the chopped chicken and mix with 2 tablespoons of bbq sauce and spread the pieces out in an even layer. If you have large pieces you might want to chop them into smaller bite sized pieces.
Step 4: Sprinkle both the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses in a ayer over the chicken. Then scatter the red onion slices evenly over the cheeses.
If you are using the jalapeño slices add them last. Make sure to slice the fresh jalapeno peppers very thin and use as much or as little as you wish.
Step 5: Place in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and edges are golden brown. Once it has cooled for a few minutes scatter fresh cilantro on top if using.
You can use other fresh herbs, a drizzle of ranch dressing or even sliced black olives as well.
Cut into pieces and serves. Store leftover flatbread pieces in an airtight container or wrap in foil. To reheat do so in an air fryer or oven for best results as the microwave can make them a bit soggy. But they are still good.
