My last few posts have been recreating or making variations of delicious foods I’ve had in Italy where we went on a fabulous vacation. One such meal was a delicious pizza much like this easy prosciutto flatbread appetizer.
I have not mastered making my own pizza crust so I found these delicious flatbreads at Aldi and thought I’d make my own version of that tasty dish. This app has 3 delicious cheese – ricotta, fresh parmesan and fresh mozzarella. These melt together into a creamy and delicious layer and make the perfect complement to the salty prosciutto ham.
I’m embarrassed to say we ate these 3 times recently. We ate them for dinner one night and everyone liked them so much. My son asked me to make them the next day when we had company and then I took this easy appetizer to a party on Memorial Day!
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
As I mentioned above I bought all of these simple ingredients at Aldi. I used premade flatbread, fresh garlic, hot pepper flakes, olive oil, fresh shaved parmesan, fresh mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese, fresh basil and prosciutto ham.
Prosciutto Ham
You can find this in a big grocery store but Aldi always carries it so if you have nearby go there. You could also substitute with very thinly sliced ham or even cooked bacon in a pinch. I used speck one time because I bought it by accident as it looked like prosciutto!
Cheeses
The fresh mozzarella is a must. Regular mozzarella would work but the fresh is so creamy and works much better so use that if you can. And of course ricotta is necessary too. The fresh shave parmesan was good but you could sprinkle regular grated parmesan if you can’t find any.
Garlic and Hot Pepper Flakes
I really liked the hot pepper flakes because it add a bit of heat to the dish but you could eliminate it if you don’t like any spice. Maybe substitute with a little black pepper though. And fresh garlic would work best.
Flatbread
This pre-made flatbread from Aldi is really tasty. You can find other brands that make the same thing. You could even use ready made pizza dough and spread it really thin and precook it a bit as an alternative. I also made this on naan bread (from Aldi) and it was delicious too.
Fresh Herbs
I used both fresh basil and fresh thyme from my garden. The basil was best but you can use any fresh herbs you want. Fresh parsley, thyme, oregano, chives, etc. would all work but I liked the basil best.
Other things you can add to this pizza if you want is fresh arugula, balsamic vinegar or glaze, roasted peppers, cherry tomatoes, thin slices of apples or pears. But it’s delicious in its simplicity too.
How to make this easy prosciutto flatbread appetizer.
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. Get out a baking sheet and spray with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
Step 2: In a small bowl add the olive oil and crushed fresh garlic. Place the flatbread on the cookie sheet and brush the mixture all over the top. Sprinkle a little hot pepper flakes over top.
Step 3: Take about ½ tablespoon of ricotta cheese and add it in mounds spread out about the flat bread like that shown below. Then sprinkle the fresh mozzarella around it.
Step 4: Next break up the slices of prosciutto ham into pieces and lay over the whole flatbread. Then using a peeler shave off some thin slices of parmesan and lay on top of the ham. You can sprinkle some salt and black pepper on top but the cheeses and meats are a bit salty so you don’t really need to.
Step 5: Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven and cook for 8-10 minutes until the cheeses melt and the edges get brown and bubbly. Take out of the oven and let cool for a few minutes.
Step 6: While it’s cooling, chop the fresh basil into thin ribbons and sprinkle on top of the flatbread. When cooled cut into squares and place on a serving platter. That’s all there is too it!
Store leftovers of this crispy prosciutto flatbread pizza in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap. You might want to reheat these in the oven or air fryer to get them crispy the next day. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
You could drizzle some balsamic glaze over top if you wish. The one I had in Italy did not have any so I didn’t but I have bought that at Aldi before so check that out too if you are interested.
As I mentioned we ate these for dinner one day. I had extra ingredients and even used some naan bread from Aldi. that too was delicious but I like the presentation of the flatbread pizza for a party. For dinner you can eat this with a nice green salad like this one with asparagus (which was also inspired by my Italy trip).
