I did not grew up with salisbury steak, the American classic dish. However every time I see a picture for it I want to make it. And finally last week I did make this keto salisbury steak recipe and boy am I glad I did.
It’s super easy to make and the beef just as so much flavor from the mushroom and onion sauce. I just used preformed burgers and didn’t even and kept all the seasoning in the sauce and on top of the burgers. So this recipe too very little time.
So next time you are looking for an easy family meal for busy weeknight dinners this low carb salisbury steak is the one. Even if you aren’t on a low carb diet you will enjoy this tasty main dish. Eat this mashed cauliflower and it makes a great keto comfort food meal.
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
Below you can see the simple ingredients I used – beef burgers, balsamic vinegar, onion soup mix, Better than Bouillon, mushrooms, steak seasoning and butter. You can season with salt and black pepper if you want but felt there was enough salt in the soup mix and bouillon. So if you want a bit more heat add the black pepper only.
Beef Burgers and Steak Seasoning
I chose to use preformed beef patties I bought at Aldi because they always look nice and my husband has commented that he liked them. Also because I am not mixing anything in with the ground beef. You can of course make your own burgers. I use the steak seasoning on the burgers to give them more of a steak flavor.
Balsamic Vinegar and Butter
I found that this combination of ingredients makes a nice sauce, especially with onions. I would not substitute other vinegar flavors.
Onion Soup Mix and Better that Bouillon (Beef Flavored)
The onion soup mix is how you get all of the seasoning and dehydrated onions add great flavor. If you don’t have any onion soup mix you can use dehydrated onions or even fried yellow onions. I would use a bit more Better than Bouillon though.
I love using Better than Bouillon products as they add tons of flavors to soups, stews and dishes like this one. If you don’t have any you can use regular bouillon in its place. Or you could even use a ½ cup beef broth instead of the water and bouillon. But I highly recommend you try Better than Bouillon.
Mushrooms
I just use fresh button mushrooms because I thought it would go great with the meat. If you are not a mushroom fan you can eliminate them. If you prefer canned mushrooms you can use those but I am not a fan. It’s up to you.
Note some people use sour cream or heavy cream to make a creamy mushroom sauce. You could add that to the sauce mixture when you whisk everything together. I would use 2 tablespoons of either one if you are interested in doing that. Both are low in carbs.
How to make this keto salisbury steak.
Some people like to form the hamburger steaks into an oval patties. I just found it easier to keep them as regular round burger shapes. You can do either one.
Step 1: Heat up a large skillet to medium high heat. Sprinkle steak seasoning on both sides of the meat patties and add the burgers to the pan. You can spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray first if you need to.
Add the burgers to the pan and brown on both sides for 3-4 minutes then turn the heat down to medium heat. Take the burgers out and set aside.
Step 2: Add a tablespoon butter to the pan and when it’s melted add the mushrooms slices and turn the heat to medium heat. Cook the mushrooms until they are nice and golden brown.
Step 3: Add the burgers back to the pan. In medium bowl add the water, soup mix, Better than Bouillon, melted butter and balsamic vinegar. Whisk together then pour the gravy mixture over the meat. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes until the meat is cooked through.
Note that the keto gravy is more of a sauce and a little bit thin but has lots of flavor. This is because we are not using cornstarch or flour to thicken it like you would traditional gravy. Both would add carbs to the dish. However it really is super flavorful. If you are interested in a keto thickener, try ½ teaspoon xanthan gum.
Step 4: Take the skillet off the burners and let cool a few minutes, then serve. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if you want to add a bit of color. Store leftovers in an airtight container. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
