My son is a pizza fanatic. I don’t want us eating bread all the time so I try to find pizza substitutes like these low carb stuffed pizza burgers. Of course we still eat pizza … well my son does but I have come up with quite a few low carb pizza type recipes.
These recipes satisfy that craving pizza craving for me. This one in particular was a recipe that my son really liked and it’s very easy. The burgers are stuffed with cheese, topped with cheese and baked in a low carb marinara sauce and each burger has just 3.6g net carbs!
Hot To Make A Cheese Stuffed Burger
I found that cheese sticks make the best stuffing. It stays in place and you get that stretchy cheese pull from it.
To make cheese stuffed burgers I like to make double the amount you want but make them into thin patties. That way you can place the cheese on top of one and place another on top of the cheese. Then you just have to pinch and seal the sides.
I have also come to like these metal rings pictured below. They come in handy for making patties.
What Is The Best Low Carb Marinara Sauce?
I shop at Aldi all the time and love their Specially Selected Premium Marinara sauce. It only has 5g net carbs per ½ cup of sauce. I like that I can easily get it and it’s inexpensive as I use marinara sauce a lot in my home. However there are lower carb sauces that you can buy on Amazon.
This Organico Bello has 2g net carbs and this Rao’s has 3g net carbs per half cup. However I have not tried either but they have good reviews. If you have tried them, could you drop a comment below and let me know how you liked them.
(UPDATE: I have recently found Rao’s in Costco but the net carbs are different. It has 5g net carbs but I have to say it is delicious! My new favorite regardless if it is low carb or not. The Organico Bello is a bit too sour for me and I don’t think I would buy it again. Just my opinion.)
Low Carb Stuffed Pizza Burgers Recipe
Simple prepare your stuffed burgers as explained above. Brown one side and then flip over. Pour about ¼ cup of sauce over each burger and then top with a slice of mozzarella. Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and browned.
Notes To The Recipe
- You can add extra sauce to the pan if you are serving with zucchini noodles or something like that.
- Also you can stick it under the broiler if you want the cheese to brown more but you still have to bake them first to make sure the burgers are cooked.
- I used 1 ¼ lb of meat so that I could easily stuff them but they are big. You can use more or less meat but the bigger burgers are easier to stuff.
As I mentioned above these are big burgers and they are full of cheese. You will only want to eat one because they are filling. A nice side dish would be green beans, broccoli or spinach.
I hope you enjoy these as much as we did. My son loved them as you can imagine since he’s a pizza lover. The nutritional information for 1 burger is:

Has anyone tried this and added peppers and onion to the sauce on the sides of the burgers? I am wondering if this would work well? Also if putting them in before baking would cook the peppers and onions all the way? Any advice would be grateful!
Denise
Hi Christina, I have never done this but it sounds good! I would be a little worried the peppers and onions would not cook all the way, so I suggest maybe microwaving them for about 4 minutes before adding to the pan. Then they would cook the rest of the way in the oven. Or saute them first before making the burgers. Regardless that sounds tasty and maybe someone else will pipe in.
Adrienne
My family loved them! We use ground turkey, but hey still turned out great!! Any recommendations for a side dish? I’m thinking sautéed zucchini and squash medley but would love input.
Denise
Hi Adrienne, so glad they liked it! Here is a link to all my side dishes so you can just look and see what appeals to you. I usually would eat zucchini noodles with this but often like green beans with bacon or parmesan asparagus. Hope you find something you like and thanks for taking the time to come back and comment. I really appreciate it.

I can’t wait to try out this recipe! As for marinara sauces…Rao’s is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST! My family loves it! I think it is the closest thing you can get to homemade sauce! Glad to know it’s low carb as well!
Denise
Good to know! Thanks for sharing Chelsea!

Cooking time is totally off. Burgers have been in the oven at 400° for 20 min and are only at 129° internal temp.
they took a while, but they were delicious! I think I will brown them on the stove longer, as you said.
Denise
Hi Sara,
I’m going to make this again tonight and double check everything. I’ll get back to you tomorrow. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. It could be the size of the burgers or even how long I browned them compared to you. However I’ll double check everything tonight.
Denise
Hi Sara,
I made this again tonight and they still seem fine with me. I did them in a hurry and the meat I used was even fairly cold from the refrigerator. I took the temp after 15 min in the 350 degree F oven was 162 degrees. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I browned them longer on the stove. I”m sorry it didn’t work out for you but maybe if someone else has this problem they will chime in.
