This keto grapefruit gin fizz cocktail is a refreshing and tasty drink for spring or summer. The combination of fresh grapefruit juice and fresh spicy ginger root is the perfect complement to gin. There is also an easy low carb simple syrup with these flavors. You can make this cocktail with gin or vodka and it also tastes great without alcohol for a mocktail.

Lately I’ve been going through old posts and rediscovering why I liked them so much. Case in point is the keto grapefruit gin fizz cocktail. it’s light and refreshing but I love the flavor combination of ginger and grapefruit!
My hubby and I made these last weekend and he loved it. He’s not usually one for fruity cocktails but he liked the grapefruit and gin together. I don’t always like the taste of gin but with the grapefruit and ginger flavors it was delicious.
There is a tasty simple syrup that goes with this drink and it makes quite a bit so you can keep it in the refrigerator for making mocktails too. It has all the flavor without the alcohol and still tastes great.
What type of liquors can you use in this drink?
Most clear alcohols like vodka, gin, rum and tequila have 0 carbs. You have to watch with flavored alcohols as they may have added sugar but the standard bottles will not have any carbs.
I personally prefer vodka most of time and you can definitely use that in this drink. However I also really liked the gin and it is a gin fizz after all. You could probably make it with rum and tequila too but for best results use the gin or vodka.
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
I just used a few simple ingredients to make this tasty drink – fresh grapefruit, gin, diet ginger ale and a low carb simple syrup. The simple syrup consisted of water, sweetener, fresh ginger root and grapefruit zest.
Fresh Grapefruit
Fresh grapefruit is essential to this recipe because I used a bit of the juice and the zest from the skin. The grapefruit zest is a great way to add flavor without carbs. If you don’t care about carbs you could use bottles grapefruit juice. Just make sure there are not any added sugars if you can.
Ocean Spray 100% juice and Simply Grapefruit are two brands to try. We are only using 2 tablespoons of juice per drink the impact won’t be too bad crabwise.
Sweetener
I like to use Swerve products. Today I used their Allulose blend but you can use your choice of sweetener or sugar substitute.
Fresh Ginger & Diet Ginger Ale
If you can find fresh ginger root that would be great. You can also use the ginger paste if you can’t find the root. Aldi carries the paste and sometimes the fresh ginger root.
You use this in the simple syrup but if you can’t find any you could possible skip the simple syrup and just go with the diet ginger ale (any brand). You will want to add a bit of sweetener to the drink and the zest of the grapefruit if you can.
Gin or Vodka
As I mentioned above this is meant to use gin but you could also use vodka if you prefer. It might even taste alright with rum or tequila but it’s meant to be made with gin. Any brand will do. I try to buy middle shelf for my keto drinks.
How to make a keto grapefruit fizz.
Step 1: To make the simple syrup, heat up a small sauce pan. Turn the heat to medium heat. Add the water, sweetener, grapefruit zest and grated ginger root.
Step 2: Bring the mixture to a simmer and whisk until the sweetener has dissolved. Let it simmer on low for about 5 minutes to reduce the liquid and make it more concentrated. Take off the heat and let cool a bit. When cool, strain into a small jar and set aside.
Step 3: In a cocktail shaker or glass add the grapefruit juice, gin and a teaspoon of the simple syrup. Mix and then add your ice cubes. Pour enough ginger ale according to your tastes. You can make the drink stronger or weaker to suit you.
If you want you can add a simple garnish by cutting a few slices of fresh grapefruit and attach to the rim of the glass.
Cover and store the simple syrup in the refrigerator for a month or so. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
As I mentioned above you can easily make this a mocktail by just eliminating the alcohol. I have one right now as a matter of fact!
Other variations and ways to make this drink.
- Use soda water instead of the diet ginger ale. Then add the grapefruit zest and some grated ginger to your glass. Of course you’d want to use the gin and grapefruit juice too.
- Substitute diet ginger beer for the ginger ale. Ginger beer is typically spicier and it gets its carbonation for fermentation. You’ll have to taste test a bit to get the right balance of ginger to grapefruit.
