Recipe ingredients and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used I mostly bought at Aldi – a package of premade flatbreads, whipped cream cheese, cold smoked salmon, red onion, capers and lemon wedges.
- store bought flatbread – I buy these at Aldi and they are so easy and tasty as well as versatile. It’s perfect for a quick dinner or appetizer as you do so much with them (see below for more ideas). You can also use premade naan bread which you can also find at Aldi.
- cold smoked salmon – my husband makes smoked salmon in his smoker which is different from cold smoked. Aldi has this right now and pretty often. I think you could also buy it at Walmart and definitely at Costco. It keeps for a long time in the refrigerator too. You could substitute with the hot smoked salmon if you wish.
- whipped cream cheese – This is what my son likes and what is most used on a smoked salmon bagel. I used the whipped cream cheese because it was easy to spread. My husband usually uses good butter but the cream cheese is better for this recipe. Other spreadable cheeses like Boursin could work or you can add some goat cheese to the cream cheese if you wish. I used to use fresh avocado on my bagels when we ate this so that is another options.
- red onions – This is something we always use to add a bit more flavor to the dish. I slice the red onions very thin so they are not too strong. You could also use pickled red onions or Vidalia onions which are sweeter and less strong. Chopped green onions would also work as well as mixing chives in the cream cheese spread.
- capers – Tasty like small briny olives to me. They are sharp and tangy and add a nice flavor to dish. If you’ve never had them you can eliminate them. We buy a big jar from Costco and they last forever.
- fresh lemons – The acidity from a squeeze of fresh lemon juice really works good and I would highly recommend it. You could use bottled lemon juice too but fresh is better. You can also sprinkle some lemon zest on top too for added brightness to the dish.
Other ingredients to try if you want.
If you want to garnish with dried or fresh herbs, dill is usually the herb that goes great with this flavor combination. I personally don’t like dill but it would be the one to use.
We usually eat this on everything bagels so you could sprinkle some everything bagel seasoning over the cream cheese if that is something that you like.
And lastly you can add some thinly sliced cucumber to this dish. I love cucumbers but my husband is not a fan so I did not.

How to make this easy smoked salmon flatbread.
NOTE: You can toast this bread before assembling the flatbread. To do this place the flatbread right on the rack of a preheated oven (350°F) for about 8 minutes and then let it cool completely. It is not necessary but might be a preference for you so that it tastes more like a toasted bagel.
Step 1: Place the premade flatbread on a baking sheet or large platter. Spread the cream cheese evenly all over the surface.

Step 2: Layer the smoked salmon over the cream cheese. You can use as much as you want. I lightly overlapped the pieces to cover the cream cheese spread.
Step3: Lastly evenly layer the onions on the salmon and then sprinkle the capers if using. I use a mandoline on the first setting to get the thinnest slice of onion.

You can squeeze the fresh lemon on top or serve it with wedges so people can do it themselves.
This keeps really well and we ate it for 2 days as a lunch or dinner. If making this for a party or brunch you could easily make it the day before. Just cover with plastic wrap or foil and store in the refrigerator.

Smoked Salmon Flatbread Recipe
For an easy summer appetizer, breakfast or brunch, try this smoked salmon flatbread recipe. No baking required and you can make this delicious dish in minutes with just a few ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 store bought flatbread (I used Aldi's)
- 4 tablespoons whipped cream cheese
- 6 ounces cold smoked salmon
- ¼ red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons capers
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges
Instructions
- Note this is optional. But if you want to toast the flatbread ahead of time like you would a bagel you can do this though I did not. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place the flatbread right on the rack and bake for 8 m inutes and then let cool completely.
- Place the flatbread on a baking sheet, platter or large cutting board. Spread the cream cheese over the whole surface of the bread. You can use more or less to your liking.
- Layer pieces of the smoked salmon overtop of the cream cheese. Again you can use more or less to your liking. I use all that had to cover the surface completely.
- Next sprinkle the thinly sliced onions and then the capers over the salmon. I use a mandoline on the first setting to get the thinnest slice of onion. You can then sweeze some fresh lemon over the top or serve with the lemon wedges so everyone can do it themselves.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. You can make this the day ahead of time if serving for a brunch or party.
