Recently I’ve been playing around with wontons, and love how crispy they get when air fried. Today I wanted to make a sweet wonton recipe instead of the savory ones I was playing around with and whipped up these easy air fryer apple pie wontons.
The filling is made up of diced cinnamon apples cooked in brown sugar sweetener and butter. The filling itself is delicious and I also used it in an upcoming ice cream recipe. Then air frying the wontons creates a crispy mini apple pie that can be a healthy after school snack or even party dish.
My husband and I ate them for dessert for a few days! And now I have another dish to add to all my apple recipes!
Recipe ingredients I used.
The simple ingredients I used were apples, butter, Swerve brown sugar sweetener, ground cinnamon, wonton wrappers and Swerve regular sweetener.
- Fresh Apples – I use a Smic Crisp variety as that is what I had on hand. They were juicy, sweet and crunchy. However you can use green Granny Smith, MacIntosh, Honey Crisp or whatever is your favorite kind. It is apple season and there are a lot of varieties to pick from.
- Swerve Sweetners – I used Swerve brown sugar sweetener in the filling and regular Swerve to make a cinnamon sugar for sprinkling on top. I used the sweeteners because I like to cut out as much sugar as I can. However you can use regular brown sugar and granulated white sugar if you don’t care about carbs or sugar content.
- Wonton Wrappers – You can see the brand of wonton wrappers that I bought. You want the smaller size and not the larger egg roll size. Though I guess you could use them if you wanted bigger pies. You can usually find the wonton papers in the produce section of grocery store in the refrigerated section.
How to make apple pie wontons in the air fryer.
Step 1: First make the apple pie filling by dicing the apples into uniform small pieces. I cored them and then cut it into rings first and the diced them up. I like keeping the skins on but if you don’t like them you can peel the first.
Step 2: Next add them to a saucepan along with the butter, brown sugar sweetener and cinnamon. Mix well and cook for 8-10 minutes until the soft and create a nice brown sugar sauce.
Step 3: While the apples are cooking, get a small bowl and mix the regular sweetener or sugar with some cinnamon to make the topping then set aside. I like to use a 1:5 ratio of cinnamon to sweetener.
Step 4: Let the apple mixture cool a bit. Get out the wontons and a small dish of water. Place a wonton on a flat surface like a plate or cutting board. Use a small amount of the filling and place in the middle of the raw wrapper.
Try to just get the apples and not the sauce. You can keep the leftover brown sugar sauce from the apples and use that as a dipping sauce.
Then dip a finger it into the water and trace the edges on each side of the wrapper. Fold over and use a fork to crimp them shut. Below you can see the ones that made and how much filling I used. Continue to assemble all of them with the apple filling.
Step 5: Spray the basket of the air fryer with nonstick cooking spray and then place the wontons in it. Spray the tops of the wrappers with the spray oil or you could also use a little melted butter but the spray oil worked fine for me. Finally sprinkle some of the cinnamon sugar on top.
Bake at 350°F for 5 or 6 minutes. I found they get crispy quite fast and because the filling is already cooked that’s all you need to look for.
Step 6: take them out of the air fryer and place on a plate or platter and serve immediately. If you want to use the leftover brown sugar sauce you can serve it as a dip for the apple pie wontons. Or you can drizzle it over the top.

Store leftovers in an airtight container or baggie. Note they will lose their crispiness. You can just heat them up in the air fryer for a few minutes or in the oven as opposed to the microwave. But even chewy they were tasty to me.
To make these in the oven: Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Place the uncooked pies on the prepared baking sheet and spray the tops with the nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 7-10 minutes until nice and crispy. Serve immediately.

Apple Pie Wontons Recipe (air fryer)
For a healthy, low sugar fall dessert or snack try this air fryer apple pie wontons. A crispy wonton filled with an easy sweet apple filling makes for a fun dessert, snack or even an appetizer to take to a party.
Ingredients
- 3 cups diced apples (approx. 2 apples)
- 3 tablespoons sweetener (I like Swerve Sweetener)*
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar sweetener (I like Swerve Brown)*
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 25 wonton wrappers (small size)
Cinnamon Sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 ½ teaspoons sweetener*
Instructions
- Dice the apples into small uniform pieces. I did not peel them because I like the skin but you can if you want. I would core them and then cut into rings. This made chopping them into small pieces easier.
- Add the apples, 3 tablespoons of brown sugar sweetener (or regular), 3 tablespoons sweetener (or regular sugar) and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix well and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes until the apples are soft and there is some sauce as well.
- While they are cooking down, make the cinnamon sugar by mixing ½ teaspoon cinnamon with 2 ½ teaspoons of sweetener (or regular sugar) in a small bowl or ramekin and set aside.
- Get out a plate or any flat surface. Place a wonton on it and gather a small bowl of water. Add a small amount of apples to the middle of the wrapper. Try not to get any of the sauce. You can use the sauce as a dip or drizzle later if you want. Next dip your finger into the water and draw an outline around the edges of the wrapper. Then fold over into a triangle shape. Use a fork or your fingers to press the edges together to seal. Set aside and continue with all the wrappers. I got 25 out of this batch.
- When ready to air fryer, spray the basket with nonstick cooking spray. Place the wontons in the basket but don't overlap. You may have to make these in batches. Spray the tops with nonstick cooking spray and sprinkle a bit of the cinnamon sugar on top. Bake at 360°F for 5 minutes until nice and crispy golden brown. Cooking time may vary so you might want to check at 4 minutes or may need to cook for a few more minutes.
- To make in the oven, preheat to 375°F. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray and place the wontons on top. Spray again and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar on top. Bake for 7-10 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
- When done, place on a plate or patter with a little bowl fo the leftover sauce if you want. Or you could even drizzle some on top. They don't need either though. Store leftovers in an airtight container. To reheat place back in the air fryer for a few minutes or oven. They won't get crispy in the microwave.
Notes
* I like to keep my sugar intake down and so I used sweeteners in this dish but you can substitute with regular white sugar and regular brown sugar.
