This keto cottage cheese chocolate mousse is rich, thick and creamy like the best chocolate pudding you ever had but it’s made with cottage cheese! Add extra flavoring, add ins or toppings to make it an even more decadent dessert or sweet snack. This recipe is low carb, high protein and sugar free with just 4 grams net carbs and 25 grams of protein without using chocolate protein powder!

If you have never tried whipped cottage cheese I urge you to try it. Especially if you don’t like the texture of cottage cheese. I’ve made this delicious berry flavored version, a peanut butter version and today I made this luscious and rich keto cottage cheese chocolate mousse. These are great options if you have a sweet tooth and they are healthy protein desserts!
This keto mousse is so good a perfect if you are a chocolate lover. It has a creamy texture like a decadent pudding or chocolate cheesecake but it only takes minutes to make and is low carb, high protein and sugar free!
Another plus is that you can change up the flavors with extracts or add toppings like fresh fruit to further add to its deliciousness. It’s a decadent treat or quick snack for those on low carb diets even if you aren’t a fan of cottage cheese!
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
I just used a few simple ingredients to make this protein chocolate mousse recipe – Good Culture plain cottage cheese, Divine cocoa powder, Swerve confectioners sweetener, vanilla cream stevia, salt and hazelnut extract (optional).
Cottage Cheese
One reason I like this mousse recipe is that you don’t have to use heavy cream like you would in a traditional chocolate mousse which can bee to rich sometimes. And it has a high protein content.
I highly recommend this Good Culture cottage cheese because it is low in carbs and has very good texture and consistency. It has just 3g net carbs per ½ cup. Daisy is the second lowest brand with 4g net carbs per ½ cup. If you don’t care about carbs use whatever you want.
And it doesn’t matter if it’s full fat or low fat cottage cheese. All types of cottage cheese are an excellent source of protein and will work in this keto dessert.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
Divine cocoa also is very low carb for unsweetened cocoa powder but you can use whatever kind you want. I like the rich color and flavor of Divine too and I can find it in my regular grocery store.
Sweetener
Also I used Swerve powdered sugar sweetener and Sweetleaf vanilla liquid stevia drops to add sweetness. You can use a keto friendly sweetener of choice. Just taste test to get the right sweetness level for your tastes.
Flavor Extract
Lastly I used hazelnut extract because I was going for a Nutella type of flavor but you can use vanilla extract or any extract you want to change up the flavor profile. Peppermint, raspberry, caramel, coconut or other flavored extract would all go good with this recipe.
How to make whipped cottage cheese chocolate mousse.
Step 1: First spoon the cottage cheese into a high-powered blender or food processor. I find the food processor much easier to get all the mixture out of as opposed to the blender but use whichever you prefer.
Blend on high until you have a creamy and smooth texture like that picture below. I love this mini food processor for smaller keto recipes like this.
Step 2: Add the cocoa powder, stevia, Swerve sweetener, pinch of salt and flavor extract if using. Blend well to mix and combine.
Step 3: Spoon chocolate mixture into a bowl or dessert dish and add your favorite toppings on the creamy base if you want. Store leftovers in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap. Please scroll down for the printable recipe card.
TIP: Using a dark chocolate bar and a microplane to make chocolate shavings. You can really stretch a small piece of chocolate for maximum impact. Give it a try! See below.
Flavor combinations and add ins to try with this recipe.
Above you can see that I toasted some hazelnuts and also grated a Lindt 90% cacao dark chocolate bar on top of this sweet treat. These 2 ingredients alone with the hazelnut extract were to give it that Nutella flavor but the hazelnut extract is just ok. The toppings were great but the hazelnut flavor wasn’t necessary.
Here are other flavor options to try with the whipped chocolate cottage cheese base.
- Flavor extracts – raspberry, strawberry, orange, coconut, caramel, butterscotch, peanut butter, mint or marshmallow are all delicious ideas. Remember these add flavor but no sweetness. And specifically with this chocolate flavor, peppermint extract would go great for a thin mint cookie flavor.
- Torani sugar free syrups – I love sugar free s’mores, salted caramel, coffee, hazelnut and Irish cream are my favorites sugar free flavorings.
- SweetLeaf flavored liquid stevia drops – I use vanilla cream liquid sweetener all the time because it adds sweetness and vanilla flavoring so you don’t have to add vanilla extract. They also have other flavors and English toffee is my new favorite.
- Other flavor changers – Try natural peanut butter, instant coffee, almond butter, etc.
- Toppings – low carb fruit like fresh berries or frozen berries, sugar free jams, keto cookies, toasted nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts), seeds, toasted coconut, mini chocolate chips, chocolate shavings or cocoa nibs.
- Healthy but not low carb toppings – honey, maple syrup, dried fruit, cereal, granola, snack bars, healthy cookies, biscotti, etc.
See it’s just takes minutes to make this rich, chocolate bowl of whipped cottage cheese! You could even eat this cottage cheese chocolate mousse for breakfast as it’s low in carbs and high protein. But I like it more as a low carb snack or healthy dessert. I can wait to try another flavor though it would be hard to beat this one if you have chocolate cravings. Enjoy!

Kylie says
How do I stop it from being so grainy?
Denise says
Hi Kylie, some brands are grainier than others. I really like the Good Culture brand as it seems to be pretty creamy. That being said they all have a bit of that I suppose.
Geri says
Hi Denise~this looks super delicious! I’m confused, where is 12 g of fiber coming from? TY🙏🏻
Geri
Denise Wright says
Hi Geri,
It is because I use Divine cocoa powder and it has 12 g of fiber. Other cocoa powders probably have less.
Hope that helps.

Wonderful idea!
Kristen says
Hi I was wondering if this could be frozen to make it a fake Gelato but with way more protein. Also could extra protein powder be added to this to really set it over the top?
Denise says
Hi Kristen, I’m sorry I am just getting back to you as I was on vacation.
Yes you can add protein powder and I have made ice cream with it. It was a bit more icy than creamy like a gelato but it was good. Here is s link the ice cream version. Good luck!

Pansela says
How much instant coffee powder should I add to the recipe if I want this coffee flavoured? And how do I adjust the amount of sweeteners then since the coffee is bitter?
Either way thank you for the recipe, it’s very simple, and I just use Lindt dark chocolate right away in the mixture instead of cocoa powder.
Denise says
Hi Pansela,
To be honest I am not sure. I would start small and then add more, taste testing along the way. Perhaps start with 1 teaspoon espresso and then taste. If you have the coffee flavor you like then note if it is sweet enough for you to balance the bitter coffee. Again start small with 1 teaspoon extra sweetener.
Hope that helps and I’m glad you liked it. I love that Lindt dark chocolate myself!
Denise
Cathy says
Thanks for this recipe. I am always looking for high protein treats. On my counter, cottage cheese has no
fiber. Where do the 12 grams of
Fiber come from?
Denise says
Hi Cathy, the fiber comes from the cocoa powder I use. It’s Divine cocoa powder and it has no net carbs because of all the fiber. Hope that makes sense!
April A Lewis says
Hi, just wondering what can be used instead of Stevia which causes severe debilitating migraines which I suffer with and the stevia definitely brings on some wicked migraines?? please let me know because I would definitely love to try this recipe.
Thanks,
April Lewis from London Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 😊
Denise says
Hi April, I’m sorry to hear that stevia causes you such problems. You can use any kind of sweetener your want. And if you are not worried about carbs you can use regular sugar, honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, etc. Any will work with this recipe. Hope that helps and that you like it!
Orvilla says
Can this be made with fat free cottage cheese? I do weight watchers and it would be 0 points for me.
Denise says
Hi Orvilla, I can’t see why not. That’s good to know. I’ll have to tell my sister in law who does WW. Hope you like it.
Yvonne Fitzner says
Good Culture makes 4% whole milk cottage cheese and 2% low fat cottage cheese. Which one is used in your recipe?
Denise says
Hi Yvonne you can use either as they both have 3g net carbs per 1/2 cup and when you whip them up you won’t notice a difference in texture. I hope that helps!
Shannon scheffel says
I make something similar, but less complicated. I whip 1/2 cup cottage cheese then add one scoop of Vital Proteins collagen peptides (chocolate), which is sweetened with stevia.
It makes one serving and is exactly 100 calories and 22 g of protein!
So easy, so delicious, and totally satisfies my sweet tooth!
Denise says
That sound great! Thanks for sharing.
Kathy says
Hi Shannon, Thank you for the idea! I’m fully going to try this. I have a big container of the Vital Proteins chocolate flavour!
