My husband and I just love peppers and onions on just about anything and that’s why we both love the delicious flavor of this keto ground beef Philly cheesesteak recipe. It’s super easy to make and the flavorful meat with colorful peppers and onions along with melty cheese makes for a delicious dinner for us.
Using ground beef instead of steak makes this dish more affordable and perfect for busy weeknights. I always have ground beef in the freezer and so this is a tasty low carb dinner I put together quickly. I eat it as is with a fork or sometimes I top a big salad with it. My hubby likes it with rice or on a hoagie roll like a traditional cheesesteak sandwich.
I love this easy version too because it’s naturally low carb and high protein too and I’ve been trying to increase our protein intake. But mostly I love it because it’s an easy and tasty one pot meal.
Why I love this recipe.
- It’s low carb (3.9 grams net carbs) and high protein 37.9 (grams of protein).
- It’s an easy dinner and it’s done in 30 minutes.
- It’s inexpensive because you are using ground beef instead of steak.
- It uses just 7 simple ingredients.
- You can eat these dinner in different ways. I eat it as is or on a salad, while my husband eats it over rice or on a roll.
- You can easily freeze portions of this dish for a quick low carb lunch.
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used for this recipe was ground beef, sweet bell peppers, green bell peppers, yellow onion, mushrooms, slices of provolone cheese, gruyere/swiss cheese, steak seasoning and olive oil.
Ground Beef
I like to use 85% ground beef because I wanted it to have some fat for flavor but did not want much excess grease. If you have a preference for higher fat content of meat, just drain some of the grease out and if you want to use a lean ground beef, you may need to add a bit more oil.
You can also use steak or substitute beef for ground chicken or ground turkey in this dish. I specifically wanted to use hamburger so that I could make this quickly and affordably and still have that steak flavor.
Peppers, Onions and Mushrooms
These the vegetables typical that can be used in this sandwich. I used both colorful sweet bell peppers (red, yellow and orange bell peppers) and green peppers. I like the combination for both appearance and taste. You call use all green or all sweet bell peppers if you want.
Yellow or white onions are a must for me as well but not everyone likes mushrooms so eliminate them if you want. I also use fresh not canned mushrooms as they have much more flavor to me.
Cheeses
Different people use different cheeses and everything from provolone to cheese whiz. I like to use slices of provolone cheese for the flavor and I like how it melts.
I also used a gruyere/swiss shredded cheese blend I find at Aldi because I like the flavor. That being said you can use your cheese of choice like mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, American cheese, etc.
Seasoning
And for seasoning I used steak seasoning to give the ground beef more of a steak flavor. If you don’t have any, you can just season liberally with salt and ground black pepper or even add a sprinkle of onion powder and garlic powder.
How to make keto ground beef Philly cheesesteak.
This is how to make ground beef Philly cheesesteak. It’s a family favorite and perfect for me being on a low carb diet when they are not.
STEP 1: Started with an oven safe pan or skillet and heat it up on the stove to a medium high heat. A cast iron skillet would work too. Add the ground beef and sprinkle some steak seasoning on top then turn the heat down to medium heat. Brown the hamburger meat until cooked through.
STEP 2: Meanwhile in another skillet heat to medium heat and add the olive oil. Saute the vegetables (bell peppers, mushrooms and onions) while the beef mixture cooks.
NOTE: You can saute all of the items in one pan from the beginning but I want to finish this as quickly as possible so I used two.
STEP 3: When both the ground beef and vegetables are done, mix the veggies together with the ground beef mixture and then sprinkle the shredded cheese and cheese slices on top.
STEP 4: Set the pan in the oven and under the broiler for about 5 minutes to melt the cheese and get it nice and golden brown.

I have also put individual portions of this dish in meal prep containers and froze for quick low carb lunches. Just pop in the microwave to reheat.
How to serve this dish.
Because I like to keep this a keto dinner recipe, I eat mine as is for a tasty keto lunch or on top of a big green salad with a creamy parmesan dressing (see below).
My husband likes to make a rice bowl or eat it in a hoagie roll or on hamburger buns to make it like the classic sandwich though neither are low carb options. It really is a tasty dish no matter which way you serve it.
Notes and tips for this low carb recipe.
- You can play with the amounts of vegetables you use to lower the carbs. According to my nutritional calculator, 1 cup of each of the following vegetables have – green peppers (4.4g net carbs), sweet red peppers (5.9g net carbs), onions (12.2g net carbs) and mushrooms (1.6g net carbs).

Some carb counts for 1 cup of cheese are: shredded mozzarella (2.5g), shredded gruyere (0.4g), shredded cheddar (1.4g) and 1 oz provolone slice (0.6g).

This was good and relatively quick to put together – but maybe I cheated a little b/c I had already food prepped over weekend all ingredients for this dish. I used mozeralla b/c it’s all I had. Fam enjoyed. I gave them rice with it and they ate on ciabatta rolls. I had mine no roll and no rice. Will definitely make again.

I make a similar dish to this one using cauliflower and I love it. Must try your version.

So I saw this recipe and thought it sounded pretty blah and honestly didn’t read the comments but made it anyway for lunch. I did everything by the recipe but added 2 decent sized cloves of garlic. I used Buc-ee’s steak seasoning if anyone is familiar (and from Texas!) and it was perfect. Really tasty! Didn’t feel deprived at all and ate it by itself. Thanks for the great recipe!

Denise says
Hi Allison, so glad he likes it!
lorraine says
Is it one cup each of the red, yellow and orange bell peppers or one cup total
Denise says
Hi Lorraine, I’ve fixed the recipe. You are to use 1 cup total of the sweet peppers (yellow, red and/or orange) and 2 cups of the green peppers. The colored peppers have a couple extra carbs that I is why I just use one cup. However there really is much difference so if you wanted to use just the colored peppers that would be fine. But you want to use 3 cups of pepper strips total. Hope that helps!

How big is the serving size? Thanks! 😊
Denise says
Hi Kim, I am just guessing on this because it’s hard to measure but I would say roughly 3/4 cup. I usually just see how much my family or I eat per serving and determine it this way. Based on the pan I used, we got 6 servings from it. Hope that helps!

Hi Jennifer, I think it would be fine! The steak seasoning with help with that.

I use Montreal steak seasoning or Aldi brand of steak seasoning. Any kind would work.
