I love, love, love chocolate chip cookies and my sister in law Gayle makes the best. She shared her recipe with me and I’ve always wanted to try to make it low carb. Today I did and let me tell you these are the best keto chocolate chip cookies! They are so close to the real thing and I am super excited.
My son and my diabetic father in law both really liked these and they are serious critics. So if you are stuck at home, you might want to give these low carb cookies a try. Each cookie has only 1.5g net carbs is low carb, sugar free and gluten free too.
What You Need To Make Sugar Free Cookies
As I mentioned that this is my sister in law’s recipe and it’s essentially the Nestle Toll House cookie recipe with her tweaks. And then I tweaked it from there to make it sugar free. The ingredients I used to make it gluten free, sugar free and low carb were:
- use almond flour + xanthan gum instead of flour
- used ChocZero chocolate chips instead of regular chocolate chips
- used Swerve confectioners sweetener instead of sugar
- used Swerve brown sugar instead of regular brown sugar
If you like keto desserts and sweets I suggest trying some of the products because they really come in use.
Let’s Make The Best Keto Chocolate Chip Cookies!
To make the batter, you add the egg, vanilla, Swerve confectioners, Swerve brown sugar, butter and shortening to mixing bowl and cream together.
In a separate bowl mix the almond flour, xanthan gum, salt and baking soda. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and mix well to combine. The stir in the chocolate chips.
I like to use a Silpat silicone mat but you can use parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 minutes and then let them cool completely before taking off the cookie sheet. I got about 22 cookies out of this batch and they were a good size cookie.
Recipe Tips & Notes
- I used xanthan gum for the first time which is supposed to mimic the binding of gluten in gluten free baking. This is the first time I have used it so if you want to you can learn more about xanthan gum here.
- If you don’t have ChocZero chocolate chips (which are very low carb) you can also use Lily’s chocolate chips or take your favorite low carb chocolate bar and chop it into pieces as a replacement.
- I really like the combination of butter and shortening for chocolate chip cookies. If you don’t have shortening you can use all butter. According to the Kitchn “cookies made with butter spread more and are flatter and crisper if baked long enough. However, they are more flavorful than cookies made with shortening. Cookies made with shortening bake up taller and are more tender, but aren’t as flavorful.”
- I also really like using Swerve products. The Swerve confectioners sweetener really mixes easily and the Swerve brown sugar tastes great. You can us other sweeteners but you really need both the sugar and brown sugar flavors in chocolate chip cookies.
Other Keto Sweet Snacks To Try
If you are stuck at home and need some sweet low carb treats and snacks try some keto chocolate candy or peanut butter fudge (3 ingredients). Maybe you can whip up some jello pops (2 ingredients) or 3 ingredient lemon cheesecake mousse.
These super easy keto snacks are a great guilt free way to treat yourself.
Well I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as we did. My diabetic father in law who lives with us really enjoyed them as well as this sugar free fudge. I feel good giving him a sweet sugar free treat every once in awhile and certainly enjoy them myself.
The nutritional information for 1 cookie is.

Nita
Can I use butter or oil instead of shortening?
Denise
Hi Nita, yes you can use butter but the cookies might be a little different in texture but it will still work. I hope you like them!
Joanne
These sound good. It’s too hot to bake cookies here now. When the weather cools off, I’ll have to try them out!
PS It’s xanthan, not xanthum!
Denise
Hi Joanne,
I hope you get a chance to make these as they are very good! And yes you are absolutely right about xanthan and not xanthum. That was the first time I used it and wasn’t very familiar with it. Thanks for catching that!

Are the chocolate chips gluten free?
Denise
Hi,
ChocoZero chocolate chips are gluten free.
Barb
I assume you used dark chocolate? The recipe doesn’t say.
Denise
Hi Barb, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Yes I used 1/2 cup of Lily’s dark chocolate chips. I also made a batch with both the dark chocolate and milk chocolate ChocoZero chips which have less carbs than Lily’s but for the nutritional information I used Lily’s.
If you use the ChocZero you can use dark or milk chocolate as they have the same amount of net carbs. Hope that helps and thanks again for pointing that out.
