I am always trying to think of quick and easy dinners for my family. Because I like good food and feel guilty if I don’t take care of my family I often make meals like this spicy Italian sausage flatbread pizza on busy weeknights.
It started when my son told me he liked naan bread. I was shocked to be honest… but also excited that he learning to like different foods. Originally I made this flatbread pizza using naan bread but recently I’ve been using Aldi premade flatbreads. So I updated this post to use that too.
I bought all the ingredients at Aldi. Below you can see what this was this Italian flatbread pizza looks like if you use Aldi naan bread (top pic) and Aldi flatbread (bottom pic). Both work great.

Recipe ingredients and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used were naan bread (or premade flatbread), hot Italian sausage, olive oil, sweet bell peppers, onions, fresh garlic, asiago cheese, spinach and of course salt and black pepper. I sometimes add a bit of hot red pepper flakes for a little heat but that’s optional.
- Aldi Naan Bread or Aldi Flatbread – Naan bread makes the best pizza crust. It’s thin but chewy and very tasty. I love Aldi’s and they come 4 to a package and are pretty big in size. The flatbread come 2 to a package. This recipe makes 2 naan pizzas or 1 flatbread pizza.
- Italian Sausage – I like hot Italian sausage for this recipe but you can use sweet Italian sausage if you prefer. I end up taking off the casings and brown it like ground beef. If you only have ground beef, you can mimic the taste of Italian sausage using seasonings. Check out this homemade Italian sausage post for seasonings you should use.
- Bell Peppers, Onion and Spinach – I like sweet peppers (yellow, orange and red bell peppers) and especially like the combination of sausage, peppers and onion. Which is why I used these. I used yellow onions but I often use red onion for color. The spinach is also more for color, nutrition and to add a bit of bulk. I used fresh baby spinach. I would not use frozen spinach but if you do, make sure you wring out all the excess water first.
- Asiago Cheese – I love all the flavor you can get out of this hard cheese. You can substitute with parmesan cheese or just regular shredded mozzarella cheese if you want. But if you have asiago or parmesan I would use that or at least add a bit to the mozzarella cheese.
Variations to try.
Note that I used olive oil and garlic as the base for this dish but you could use pizza sauce or pesto to change it up a bit. However I wanted to keep it simple and let the sausage and peppers stand out. Other veggies to try are sliced mushrooms or grape or cherry tomatoes or even sun dried tomatoes.
I just remade these pizzas today and above you can see that I used flatbread instead of naan bread. Below you can see both products and they can be used interchangeably in this recipe.
How to make Italian sausage flatbread.
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. Get out a baking sheet and spray with nonstick spray. Note I used 1 flatbread but this recipe will make 2 of the Aldi naan flatbread pizzas.
If you want to make your own flatbread try using premade pizza dough, form it into a large thin rectangle and precook it before continuing with the recipe.
Step 2: Get out a large skillet and heat to medium high heat. Add the sliced onions and peppers and saute for a few minutes to soften. Then add the sausage. Make sure to take off the casing first. Break it up with a wooden spoon in the skillet as it browns.
Step 3: Next add the spinach and mix until it just wilts. Take off the heat and set aside to cook for a few minutes.
You can take it off the stove and just mix the spinach in and it will wilt instantly. No need to cook it because it will have more volume when it’s just wilted.
Step 4: Place the flatbread crust or naan bread onto the prepared baking sheet. Add the olive oil to a small bowl and add the crushed garlic. Brush the oil mixture over the flatbread. Next evenly spoon the sausage mixture.
Step 5: Sprinkle the grated asiago cheese even over the sausage mixture and place in the oven. Cook for 10-15 minutes until the cheese has melted and the flatbread is golden brown.
When done, take out of the oven and let cool before cutting with a pizza cutter. I got 8 pieces from one flatbread. This can serve 3-4 people.
We like to add a sprinkle of homemade crushed red peppers (my hubby’s recipe) on pizza of any kind but that is up to you.
Store leftovers in an airtight container. I find I like to reheat these in the air fryer for best texture but the oven works well too. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
