Recipe: Turmeric Tonic Or Golden Milk

I think I have mentioned my obsession with turmeric. Actually I probably have mentioned it more than once so my apologies. But turmeric seems to be all the buzz right now and I have a lot of it so what the heck, why not seek out new recipes for it!

It a cold, rainy day here and I was in the mood for a nice frothy, warming drink so when I stumbled on this recipe from Healthy-Holistic-Living.com for Golden Milk, I knew today was the day to make it. I of course switched it up a bit, but if you are interested in their recipe, you can find it here.

This is why I am enamored with turmeric. First all, my father was Lebanese so I grew up with all those wonderful middle eastern dishes including Holy Rice. Holy Rice is what my husband calls my rice because it is yellow from the turmeric which is unusual for him and because when it’s finished on the stove, there are a bunch of symmetrical  holes in the rice when you take off the lid. More about Holy Rice in another post.

Secondly I love Indian and Thai cuisines and they also use turmeric quite a bit. And thirdly it is very healthy. Turmeric contains curcumin which has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer agent.  Turmeric is said to prevent or relieve allergies, alzheimer’s, arthritis, cancer, depression and much more.

So on to my recipe. In a pan I poured in my coconut milk, turmeric, black pepper and pumpkin spice. Heated it till simmering. Took it off the stove and added sweetener (stevia for me) and vanilla extract. Added this mixture to my Vitamix along with the coconut oil and gave it a whirl. The outcome was a tasty, rich and creamy drink with a lovely yellow color. I’m trying to cut down on my sweet flavored drinks but some honey, agave or other sweetener would be very nice here. Enjoy!

I did not think I would enjoy this Turmeric Tonic as much as I did! Creamy & spicy, a delicious combo!
