I got this idea from a blog I follow Nourished Kitchen,  that makes perpetual bone broth. She makes it in a slow cooker and draws from it each day and then adds more water to get the most out of her chicken bones. She did this because her family drinks bone broth everyday for it’s health benefits.

I drink a lot of iced green tea in the summer and I thought how nice it would be not to have to keep brewing it and cooling it everyday so I made some perpetual citrus green tea. I drank it and refilled it for about 5 days and it was delicious! To sweeten it, I used stevia from my garden so it was ready to drink right from the jar.

Perpetual Citrus Green Tea Recipe

I started with some  Steeped Tea (note this is not an affiliate link, I just love Steeped Teas) and put that in a large mason jar. To that I added a few slices of oranges, limes and lemons.

I also talked earlier about my stevia plant that I just adore in my Mojito Infused Vodka post. The leaves are so sweet! Because I like my tea a little sweetened, I added some of the stevia leaves. I made sure to crush them  a bit with a wooden spoon after I put them in the jar to release some of the flavor. Lastly I added some filtered water and let it steep in the refrigerator.

I didn’t try it for a day or so to make sure it had time to infuse all the flavors. It was fantastic and deliciously refreshing on a hot day. So day one was a hit. I continued to replenish the water as I took tea out of jar and did so for about 5 days. It was tasty up until the end.

I think this will work with any kind of tea and you can add fruit, herbs and spices for additional flavor.  It’s fun to use herbs from your garden or seasonal fruit from your farmer’s market. I think blueberries, lemon peels and green tea would be nice or maybe some peaches, ginger and green tea. I hope you like this idea and get to use it during these last weeks of summer. Enjoy!

I’ve done that! I’ll make a big pot and it will sit on the counter all day and the next morning I just throw it out and sigh. ;.)
