Once or twice a year I like to make a natural treat for my dog, Izzy. It’s been awhile and I see how hot she gets so I thought I’d make some easy dog pops to have on hand to treat her. Needless to say she loved them but I find that she loves most anything so there’s that. 😉
Ingredients For Healthy Dog Pops
I wanted to make 3 different kinds of popsicles for Izzy:
- pumpkin, carrot and yogurt
- peanut butter, banana and yogurt
- blueberries, strawberries, coconut oil and yogurt
NOTE: After reading a few of these articles about fruits & vegetables, coconut oil, pumpkin and peanut butter and yogurt for your dog, I felt comfortable feeding these occaissnally as a treat to my pup. However if you are worried for any reason, please talk to your vet and read these articles before giving them to your dog.
Also I used all natural peanut butter (no added sugar), pumpkin puree (just pumpkin no sugar), slightly green bananas (less sugar than ripe) and fresh and frozen berries (no added sugar). In other words just pure ingredients.
What Type Of Yogurt To Use
For each I used a plain unsweetened Greek yogurt. Yogurt is high in calcium and protein and makes a good base for these dog pops. Please do not use yogurts with any artificial sweeteners or flavoring. Just use plain, unsweetened yogurt.
Some dogs have trouble with dairy products so watch for any signs of lactose intolerance.
Making The Dog Pops Recipe
All you need is a high speed blender like a Vitamix. Add your ingredients to the blender and blend on high until nice and smooth. Above you can see what the pumpkin carrot dog pops looks like.
Pour the mixture into cups and set on a cookie sheet. Place in your sticks and freeze over night. I just store mine in the cups in the freezer.
What Containers And Sticks To Use
I didn’t want to make the popsicles too big so I used some little Dixie cups I had on hand. For the sticks, I used dog dental sticks like this, popsicle sticks and some I left as is and thought I’d let her go at it in the yard someday.
They come easily out of the Dixie cup but if you have problems you can run some hot water on the outside or just cut it off. Mine came right out.
Using The Popsicle Sticks
The nice thing about the popsicle sticks is that you can plant them in the ground and not have to sit there holding it while she eats it. You can see below that I just stuck it in the grass and let her lick away.
However I do think she really liked the dog treat sticks. She kept trying to take a bit out of this one below. Unfortunately they are not sturdy enough to stick in the grown. However you can always just lay them in the grass and let your pup make as big a mess as they want.
Recap Notes About This Dog Treat Recipe
-
You can take the popscile stick end of the pop and put it into the ground so your dog can lick on it’s own.
-
For a firm dog treat stick, I used dog dental sticks from Aldi. You want a firm treat so that you can hold your pop without it falling over.
-
For the yogurt and peanut butter make sure to buy products that have no added sugar and not artificial sweeteners. I bought a nautral peanut butter and Greek unsweetened yogurt from Aldi.
-
When choosing berries keep it to strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries. Cherries are dangreous to dogs. As for the bananas I like to use slightly green bananas because I don’t think my pup needs more sugar. Again I bought these at Aldi too.
Well I hope your puppy likes these as much as mine did. It’s a fun treat to make and give to your dog on a hot summer day. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I am not a vet, I just researched these ingredients and felt they were safe for my pup. Before making these give your vet a call to be safe.

Just a quick point regarding yoghurt and lactose intolerance in dogs and cats…. The lactose (milk sugar) in the milk used to make plain yoghurt is eaten by the Lactobacillus that turn it into yoghurt so there isn’t a concern about dogs or cats eating plain yoghurt from a lactose intolerance point of view. Hope that’s helpful. Thank you for the recipes.

Thank you Ann!

I took a frisbee and a knife to make silts in the top and nailed the frisbee in the ground with gutter nails. Works great!
