It’s no secret I love my matcha green tea. I try to drink it everyday so I’m constantly coming up with different drinks to try. Recently while daydreaming about oranges I remembered an orange creamsicle smoothie I’ve made for Max and thought it would be a good combination for my morning matcha. I’m not much of a breakfast person and I’m always watching my carbs so I try to get the most out of my morning cup. I like my breakfast drinks to have some extra protein and healthy fat to keep me going and as few carbs as possible but a lot of taste. The matcha green tea itself is packed with healthy antioxidants and gives me a gentle caffeine buzz to start my day so that’s always a welcome addition.
I don’t know why but I crave oranges in the winter. I love the smell of them and the taste. My dad used to buy crates of fruit when we were young. (He was a bulk shopper before it was popular!) Anyway he used to buy crates of oranges in the winter and maybe it’s a memory from childhood that started this craving. Or maybe because oranges remind me of Florida and I’d rather be in Florida in the winter. That could be it! Enough pondering, on to the recipe.
Orange Creamsicle Protein Matcha Drink
I’m a big fan of Steeped Tea. My friend Debbie sells it and she’s really become a tea connoisseur. She has a Facebook page if you too are a tea lover and is always sharing interesting info about tea as well as recipes. Anyway this is my can of Steeped Tea Matcha. I just finished it so I’m anxiously awaiting my next can. I have a few flavored ones left but I like the plain the best. Just my opinion.
Another thing I love about oranges in the winter is the zest. It’s so bright and has a wonderful aroma. So in it goes to my orange creamsicle protein drink. The protein is from a vanilla whey powder. I like to use the vanilla protein powder instead of my Great Lakes gelatin in this recipe because I wanted extra vanilla flavor for this drink. If you are not a fan of protein powder by all means use the gelatin or skip it of you don’t care about the protein.
I also used some coconut oil for a healthy fat and for the creaminess it adds to the drink. And I added some vanilla and a bit more sweetness with some liquid vanilla stevia. I love this brand (affiliate link). Just put it all in the blender and whiz. You end up with a nice frothy, orange creamsicle protein matcha drink to start your morning. Perfect for these dreary winter days. Check out the nutrition below.
