This easy protein powder banana bread recipe is moist, delicious and perfect as a breakfast bread or keto sweet snack. This chocolate chip quick bread is also sugar free, gluten free and keto. You’ll love how easy it is to make with 10.1g protein and 1.6g net carbs per slice!

Recently I came across a recipe for keto soul bread and was really intrigued. It uses protein powder as a base instead of wheat flour so it’s gluten free and looks just like real bread!
However when I tried it, something was missing for me. So I played around and came up with this keto protein powder banana bread. I also added Lily’s dark chocolate chips for a little more sweetness and now it’s one of my favorite recipes!
I love that this keto banana bread does not use regular flour, almond flour, coconut flour nor real bananas.
It’s moist, sweet and tastes just like traditional banana bread. Best of all it’s sugar free, low carb, high protein and gluten free with just 1.6 grams of carbs per slice. Even my most skeptical critics (my husband and son) gave this healthy banana bread a 2 thumbs up.
What is keto soul bread?
Soul bread is a low carb bread recipe that uses protein powder instead of wheat flour and it was developed by a few women on Facebook. They even have their own Facebook group dedicated to it. Their recipe has only 1g net carb per slice and they have many variations on it too.
The banana chocolate chip bread recipe that I made today was based on their original recipe but I changed it up a bit. Their’s was very good but I tweaked it for a more moist texture and also made it sweeter.
Below you can see my first healthy banana bread attempt using their recipe. It looked so beautiful. This was a double batch of the recipe and it rose beautifully.
Below you can see my loaf of bread is not as beautiful but it is very moist and delicious and I bet no one would now that it is gluten free, sugar free, high protein and low carb. Seriously I’m very psyched about this recipe.
Recipe ingredients I used.
While most of these are simple ingredients and ones you should have already, there are a few unusual ones.
The ingredients I used were Isopure Zerocarb Banana protein powder, eggs, cream cheese, olive oil, butter, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, almond milk, xanthan gum, liquid stevia, Swerve brown sugar, flax meal and Lily’s chocolate chips.
So out of all of those ingredients I would highly recommend that you use Isopure Zerocarb Banana protein powder because it gives it that lovely banana flavor – no ripe bananas, just protein powder.
However if you end up using a vanilla protein powder, you can try some banana extract. Just make sure you use the lowest carb protein powder and that it’s whey protein power.
The other unsual ingredients are xanthan gum, Swerve brown sugar sweetener, liquid stevia, ground flax meal and Lily’s baking chocolate chips.
All of these are very useful for keto baking so I would consider buying them as an investment. I have compiled most of these ingredients are in my Amazon storefront if you are interested.
How to make protein powder banana bread.
While there seems to be quite a few ingredients for this recipe, it only takes a few minutes to mix them up and then set to bake.
- First thing you want to do is add the cream cheese and butter to a microwave safe bowl and bake for 30 seconds to soften.
- Then add that to a mixing bowl and beat together until nice and creamy. Next add in the eggs and mix again until well incorporated.
- Now add in the rest of the wet ingredients – almond milk, liquid stevia and olive oil as well as the Swerve brown sugar and continue to mix.
- In another medium bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients that are left – protein powder, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, xanthan gum and ground flax meal. Then add them to the wet ingredients and use a rubber spatula or large spoon to incorporate. You don’t want to use the mixer in this step. Now you can fold in the chocolate chips.
- Spray your bread pan with nonstick cooking spray and spoon the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan.
- Bake in a 325°F preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and baked through. Touch the middle and if it seems firm it should be done. Bake times may vary depending on your oven or bread pan. I used a 8½ x 4½ inch loaf tin by the way.
- Let the banana bread cool before slicing. Store in an airtight container or wrap in aluminum foil. Also you can store individual slices in the freezer for a quick keto sweet snack. Please scroll down to print the recipe card.
Quick bread recipe tips and substitutions.
- You do not have to use the chocolate chips if you don’t want but they make it a bit more sweet. I noticed that every time I make this recipe they seem to sink to the bottom when baking but it still tastes great. I highly recommend Lily’s dark chocolate chips as they have very few net carbs and taste good! Also ChocZero chocolate chips are good too.
- Isopure Zerocarb protein powders are great because they have no carbs as the name suggests. You can use other protein powders but remember that I am using banana to add the banana flavor. So if you use vanilla protein powder for example you will need to add 1-2 teaspoons banana extract. Make sure to use the lowest carb protein powder and that it’s whey protein powder.
- The xanthan gum is used a lot in keto baking because it gives it a bit of that chewy mouth feel. You can find it most grocery stores. Check out the gluten free or baking sections for it or you can get it on Amazon.
- I LOVE the flavor of Swerve Brown sugar sweetener and think it is important to the flavor in this bread. However if you want you can use monk fruit sweetener (Lakanto golden) or regular granulated sweetener.
- Also the liquid stevia is important because it adds a lot of sweetness with just ½ teaspoon. If you don’t have it your bread just won’t be as sweet but it will still be good.
- Most of these ingredients are in my Amazon storefront if you are interested.
I don’t know if you can tell from the picture below but this chocolate chip banana bread is just like classic quick breads using flour. It’s really filling though and 1 piece is definitely enough for a low carb breakfast or snack.

I don’t have liquid stevia-how much splenda (granular) would I use instead?
Thanks-Cheryl
Denise
Hi Cheryl, I would use an additional 2-4 tablespoons of sweetener. Hope you like it!
