Health benefit of pears.
A medium pear has roughly 101 calories, 1 g of protein, 27g of carbs and 6g of fiber.
That makes them a very good source of fiber to fill you up and help with digestion. The skin is where a lot of the fiber is so try not to peel them.
They are also a good source of vitamins and minerals such as potassium, vitamin C and folate and have a high water content. (source)
What kind of pears to use.
There are over 3,000 pear varieties but I used Bartlett pears which are probably the most common type. You however, can use any kind you want. Some that I used were green and some were starting to get ripe and both worked well.
Just don’t use an overripe pear that is starting to get mushy. They will be hard to to thinly slice as well as being more juicy which will take more time to bake.
The secret to making pear chips in the oven.
The secret to making these fruit chips is to make very thin and uniform slices. I used a mandoline to do this and if you have one I highly suggest you use it. Below you can see how thin I made my chips.
How to make pear chips in the oven.
- Preheat oven to 225°F.
- Cover a baking sheet or baking tray with parchment paper or silicone mat.
- Slice a fresh pear into uniform, very thin slices and lay out the pear slices flat on the parchment paper. Do not overlay if you can. If using a mandoline use the thinnest setting.
- Bake for 1 to 1 ½ hours until brown and crispy. No need to flip slices over during the baking process. Let cool before eating.
Store leftovers of these crunchy fruit chips in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Best eaten right away as they lose their crispness over time. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
NOTE: The timing may be different depending on the thickness of your slices. The first time I made these I sliced them thicker and it took 2 hours. Just check them every once in awhile to make sure they don’t burn.
One pear made about 30 pear chips because I cut them so thin. Obviously if you slice them thicker you will get less.
How to make pear chips in the air fryer.
I made apple chips in the air fryer and you would make pear chips the same way. It’s very easy.
- Spray the trays or basket of the air fryer with nonstick cooking spray.
- With a sharp knife slice pear with the skin on as thinly and uniformly as you can. Again a mandoline is very helpful for doing this. You can see how thin mine are.
- Lay them out on air fryer trays or basket in a single layer. Set the temperature to 300°F and bake for 15 minutes. Time will depend on how thick your slices are. Mine took 15 minutes. Note if you pile them up they may take a bit longer and might not cook evenly.
- Take them out and let them cool and crisp up even more. Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag.
My family really liked these oven baked pear chips and they were so easy I’ve made them a few times this week. I hope you give them a try and enjoy them as much as we did.
Pear Chips in the Oven
These pear chips are very simple to make and are a healthy snack to munch on. The slow cooking gives the pears a caramelized flavor that everyone will like.
Ingredients
- 1 pear, very thinly sliced (or as many as you like)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 225° F. Place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet and set aside.
- Thinly slice your pear using a mandoline if possible. Uniform and very thin slices are key. Also it's best to not use over ripe pears as they will be too juicy and soft to sice thinly.
- Place slices on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
- Bake for 1-1 ½ hours, checking occasionally to make sure they are done.
- Eat immediately or store in an airtight container. They may loose their crispness the more they sit out. They still taste good though. 😉

These look great! If you own a pear tree, like my neighbor does, you end up with more pears than you know what to do with. My husband started making pear wine! This recipe would be a great way to use up some pears and not let them go to waste. Love it! pinned!
