I’m a firm believer that you can add bacon to most things and they will taste even better. This homemade maple almond butter with bacon is case in point. Nut butters are one of those foods that I’ve grown to love over the years and it’s just so easy to make that don’t buy in much anymore.
While on vacation I bought a maple almond butter and just loved it. However it was a bit expensive so when I came home I decided to make my own. Then I was inspired to add a bit of bacon to it because I thought the salty, crunchy bits would add another layer of deliciousness.
You only need a few common ingredients, and this nut butter is very easy to make. Plus it’s less expensive than store bought and it tastes out of this world. It’s a perfect snack for those on a low carb diet because there is only 2 grams net carbs per tablespoon. And it has a whopping 4.9 grams of protein if you are on a high protein diet.
Recipe ingredients and substitutions.
The simple ingredients I used in this recipe were cooked bacon, vanilla extract, raw almonds, real maple syrup, a pinch of salt and avocado oil.
Raw Almonds
While I chose to use raw almonds and roast them, you could use already roasted almonds or even almond slices. When you use the raw nuts you don’t have all the added seed oils and ingredients and they seem a bit more healthy but you could make it easier on yourself with the already roasted nuts.
Maple Syrup
You can use pure maple syrup or if you are on a low carb diet you can even try keto friendly maple syrup like that shown below. I’ve made it with both and it’s comparable. Lakanto makes a monk fruit maple syrup that is very good. It’s not as thick as real syrup but it tastes good. You don’t want to use pancake syrup though if you can.
You could also use regular sweetener or even brown sugar sweetener and maple extract if you have it.
Cooked Bacon
You can use any kind of bacon you want. I like to use thick cut bacon because then your nice chunks in the spread but some might prefer small bits that you would get with thin sliced bacon.
Avocado Oil
You need a bit of oil to make the almond butter smooth. I like avocado oil for the job but you can also use coconut oil or even a butter in a pinch. Both will create a creamier nut butter.
Vanilla Extract and Kosher Salt
If you happed to use already roasted and salted almonds you won’t have to add more salt. And while I used kosher salt you can user regular table salt. I like the taste of vanilla extract to give it a hint of sweetness but as I mentioned above maple extract would work too if you have it.
How to make maple bacon almond butter with bacon.
Step 1: First you have to roast the almonds in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Get out a baking sheet and spread the raw almonds on it. Place in the oven for about 10 minutes until they become fragrant. Take out and let almonds cool completely.
Step 2: Once they have cooled place almonds into food processor along with the vanilla extract, maple syrup, salt and avocado oil. Blend until the nuts break down and form a butter. This might take up to 10 minutes. Below you can see what it should look like.
NOTE: Originally I used a mini food processor but it’s much easier to use a full size one if you can.
You have to stop and scrap down the sides every once in awhile but it will turn into homemade almond butter, I promise you.
Step 3: While the almond butter is pulsing you can make your bacon either in the microwave or stove top. When it’s done, let it cool them break into pieces.
Step 4: When the maple almond butter mixture is smooth and the bacon has cooled, fold in the bacon bits into the creamy almond butter and you are done. Spoon the creamy maple almond butter into a mason jar or airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for a week or two.
As the butter sits, it gets a bit more liquid-y but when you put it into the refrigerator it will harden up a bit. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
To be honest I would grab a spoonful of this as a snack because it tastes so good to me. However you could also eat this with apple or pear slices which is delicious. Also try it with crackers, toast or bagels.
