I love chocolate covered pretzels because they have that crunchy salty sweet combination and often over the holidays you see chocolate covered potato chips too. So I’ve been dying to make a combination and came up with this tasty potato chip pretzel bark recipe using chocolate chips.
This simple chocolate bark would make a great hostess or homemade gift for the holidays because it’s really easy and something I think many people would like. And since there are only 3 ingredients and it only takes about 5 minutes to prepare it would be very easy during the time packed holiday season.
And if you are like me and like to watch your carbs I even has a low carb version below. I used sugar free chocolate chips and few salty snacks to make it and I also made it in the microwave because I made a smaller batch.
Recipe ingredients I used and substitutions.
All you need to make this simple recipe is chocolate chips, pretzels and potato chips. Below you can see the brands I bought.
Chocolate Chips
I bought both dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips for this recipe. If you prefer one of the other you can use just one of them. I like them both and couldn’t make up my mind of which to use. I just bought Aldi brand and they were fine. You can also use chocolate bars if you have favorite brand.
You can also play around with other flavored chocolate chips. At this time of year they bring out butterscotch, peanut butter, mint chocolate, etc. White chocolate chips don’t always work out because they don’t melt the same so I don’t recommend using them.
You can also use chocolate candy discs that you find in the grocery store. Sometimes they call them melting chocolate. Just make sure they have sugar in them as baking chocolate bars have no sugar in them.
Pretzels
At this time of year they make little pretzels in various holiday shapes which would work good with this if you are making it for a gift. However I prefer bigger pretzels because I wanted them to be like store bought chocolate covered pretzels which are usually like the size pictured below. Again this is a preference.
Potato Chips
I thought it would be best to use a kettle cooked potato chip because they are heartier and would pack a bigger potato flavor. I had used wavy potato chips the first time and I didn’t like it as much so I would say try to find a kettle cooked type.
Other things you can add to this bark are peanut butter or almond butter. Both would go good with the ingredients I used. You can add some heat with hot pepper flakes or cayenne pepper in the chocolate or you can add various candies. Some options would be M&Ms, caramel pieces, toffee pieces or chopped Reeses cups etc.
How to make this easy potato chip pretzel bark recipe with chocolate chips.
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Cover a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
Step 2: Spread out the chocolate chips in an even layer onto the prepared baking sheet. Push any outlier chips to the center. Place in the oven for 5 minutes and they should melt sufficiently. They will turn glossy when they have melted enough to spread.
Note you could also add the chips to a microwave safe bowl and melt them in the microwave but then you have to spoon them onto the baking sheet and I was going for less things to clean up. But it’s an option.
Step 3: Get out a silicone spatula or butter knife and spread the melted chips to make a big layer of chocolate. Start placing the pretzels and chocolate chips gently into the melted chocolate. I left the pretzels and potato chips as whole as possible but you prefer to break them up into pieces go for it.
Step 4: Place the tray in the freezer for 30 minutes to make sure the bark has harden. Then take it out and use a sharp knife and gently press down to cut it into pieces. You can also do this by hand but do it gently so you have more control over the size of the pieces.
Step 5: Place pieces in an airtight container in the freezer or refrigerator until ready to give as a gift. Transfer into a nice box or decorative bag and give it as gifts.
If you are just eating this yourself for a dessert or snack I like to store it in the freezer so it last longer. You can keep it out on the counter and it wonโt melt but I find itโs too easy to snack on if itโs in plain site. Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.
A sugar free, low carb version to try.
I usually create low carb recipes and have had much luck substituting keto chocolate chips for regular ones in my recipes. I tried it with this recipe and it worked great. Below you can two brands that I used today, Lily mini chocolate chips and Swerve brand. I have also use ChocZero which I also like and I know Lakanto has some.
The only problem is that pretzels and potato chips are very high in carbs. So Instead I just use a few pretzels and potato chips and broke them up into little pieces to make it feel like it was more.
Also since I was making a small batch I made it in the microwave. When I am making healthy bark for myself I have been making it like this using nuts, seeds and shredded coconut. I love it!
- Place keto chocolate chips on a paper plate and placed it into the microwave for 30-60 seconds. Once they are glossy take the plate out and spread into one creamy layer.
- Gently place the pretzel and chip pieces into the melted sugar free chocolate and then place the plate in the freezer for 20-30 minutes to harden.
- Take it out and cut into pieces. Place in an airtight container or baggie and store in the freezer for a quick lower carb snack.
For this recipe I used 1 cup of keto chocolate chips, 2 ยฝ Utz pretzels and 5 Utz kettle cooked potato chips broken into pieces.
I cut the finished bark into 8 pieces and each one had the following nutrition information: 120 calories / 9.4g fat / 18.8g carbs / 14.1g fiber / 2.2g protein = 4.7g net carbs.
This homemade potato chip pretzel bark is very tasty and would make an easy homemade gift for someone this holiday. The salty pretzels and potato chips go so good with the creamy sweet chocolate. Best of all it’s takes little time to make.
And if you are watching your sugar or carbs, give the microwave lower carb version a try. As I mentioned above I made this for myself to have on hand for a snack and keep it in the freezer. It only has 4.7g net carb so that’s pretty good for a salty sweet treat. Enjoy!
