The other day I was craving traditional gyros and I didn’t want to go out to buy one and thought why can’t I make one with ground beef? So I made this keto gyro hamburger skillet recipe. It’s now one of my favorite keto dinners.
It might not look all that impressive but oh boy it has all the flavor of classic gyros without the pita of course because I wanted it to be low carb. Plus it only took 15 minutes to make!
It had spiced ground beef and was topped with lettuce, thin red onion slices, cherry tomatoes and a super easy tzatziki sauce on top. I ate it for lunch and dinner and can’t wait to make this easy keto ground beef dinner again.
Recipe ingredients I used.
There are two components to the gyro recipe – the tzatziki sauce and the gyro meat with toppings.
To make the gyro ground beef I used lean ground beef, oregano, thyme, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder.
The toppings were thinly shredded lettuce, thinly sliced red onion and chopped fresh tomatoes. I like grape or cherry tomatoes because they have less seeds and juice. You could also use Beefsteak or Roma tomato slices if you prefer.
Lastly the tzatziki sauce ingredients are wholemilk Greek yogurt, fresh garlic cloves, fresh mint and cucumbers. I like to use English cucumbers or seedless cucumbers.
How to make this keto gyro hamburger skillet.
- First things first, I made the tzatziki sauce and placed it in the refrigerator to let the flavors mesh together. So add the garlic, mint and cucumbers to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
- Place the mixture into a medium bowl and add in the Greek yogurt. Mix well, cover and refrigerate the yogurt mixture until ready to use.
- Now get out a large nonstick skillet and heat it up to a medium high heat. Coat skillet with cooking spray and then add the ground beef. Start to brown the meat and then sprinkle the seasonings over it (oregano, salt, black pepper, thyme, garlic powder and onion powder). Turn it down to medium heat to continue to brown.
- While the hamburger is browning, chop the vegetables for the toppings. I like to use romaine lettuce, red onion and grape tomatoes. I sliced both the lettuce and onion very thin.
- Once the hamburger has browned take it off the stove and sprinkle the toppings on top. Then take out the tzatziki yogurt sauce and spoon over top and serve. Note you will probably only use half of the sauce. Please scroll down to view and print the recipe card.
Other ways to eat this.
If you don’t care about carbs you can use this recipe to make ground beef gyros. Just use some warm pita bread and spoon in the meat mixture instead of the classic strips of lamb.
However if you are watching your carbs you could mix the raw meat with the spices, form into patties and make gyro burgers. Just pan fry or grill them.
Or you can easily make this into a gyro salad. Just make your salad base anyway you want and then spoon the gyro hamburger over top.
I would still recommend the tzatziki sauce but you can make a simple Greek dressing too if you want for the salad. You could also add some feta cheese and Greek olives.
