I learned about this tasty combination of ground beef & cabbage from my mother in law. It’s not something I would have thrown together myself but now I find all kinds of low carb ways to prepare it. It makes for such an easy go to dinner in a hurry.
So today I made 4 different flavors of this low carb dinner for you to choose from: Asian, Mexican, Italian and Middle Eastern. You will only need a few ingredients for each so you can have an inexpensive and tasty dinner in minutes. These also make for a good freezable meal prep recipe to have on hand in your freezer.
Ground Beef & Cabbage Ingredients For All 4 Flavors
Of course the basis of this quick recipe is just ground beef and green cabbage. It’s the seasoning that adds to the flavor of this basic combination. For all of the 4 dishes I used: ground beef, cabbage, garlic, lemon, cinnamon, taco seasoning, cheddar cheese, grape tomatoes, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, Swerve brown sugar sweetener, salt & pepper.
I’ll quickly go through each flavor combination below but as you can see these are mostly common ingredients you probably have in your refrigerator or pantry.
Asian Flavored Ground Beef And Cabbage
So the main ingredients of this version is soy sauce, Swerve brown sugar sweetener and chili garlic sauce.
Cut the cabbage and microwave for 3 minutes to quicken the recipe. I like to use this microwave steamer for precooking vegetables. While the cabbage is cooking start to brown the ground beef in a large skillet with a little olive oil. Mix the soy sauce, chili garlic sauce and brown sugar together and add to the meat along with the cabbage.
Saute for a few more minutes until the meat is completely cooked and to incorporate all the flavors. That’s it!
Italian Flavored Ground Beef And Cabbage
For this recipe I only used Italian seasoning, grape tomatoes and Parmesan cheese.
Cut the cabbage and microwave for 3 minutes. While the cabbage is cooking start to brown the ground beef in a large skillet with a little olive oil. Add the tomatoes and seasonings while browning the meat. When the cabbage is done, add it to the pan and cook for a few more minutes.
Add the parmesan cheese at the very end. Either mix it in with the cabbage or sprinkle on top.
Mexican Flavored Ground Beef and Cabbage
For this recipe I only used taco seasoning and cheddar cheese. It’s very similar to my slow cooker low carb Mexican casserole.
For this flavor, just add the taco seasoning mix while browning the ground beef. When the cabbage is done cooking in the microwave add it to the meat and cook for a few minutes. Top it off with cheddar cheese at the end.
Middle Eastern Flavored Ground Beef and Cabbage
This recipe is a bit like a Middle eastern dish I grew up with which was like stuffed cabbage roll with lemon and garlic. My grandma made it and it was so delicious! Anyway the only ingredients for this dish are cinnamon, garlic and lemon.
To make this flavor, add the cinnamon, salt and pepper when browning the meat. Cook the cabbage in the microwave like the other versions. Add the crushed garlic when you add in the cabbage. Cook for a minute or two then add the lemon. Mix well and then serve.
Portion & Freeze For Low Carb Meal Prep Meals
At this time of year I like to have premade meals in the freezer for quick lunches and dinners. Below I bought lots of these containers and have been freezing portions of my low carb recipes for my lunches.
Just pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and you are good to go. If you measure and label your containers you will know exactly how many calories and carbs are in each frozen meal.
Well I hope you give this simple ground beef & cabbage low carb dinner a try. It’s so easy and if you if you don’t add the additional flavorings you will still like it. And best of all it only takes about 10 minutes. The nutritional information for each flavor is:
Asian Flavor:
353 cals / 20.2g fat / 8.1g carbs / 3.3g fiber / 33.3g protein = 4.8g net carbs
Italian Flavor:
