I get sinus headaches every once in awhile. Not a true sinus headache that results from a sinus infection. My type of sinus headache happens when I’ve eaten a lot of certain kinds of foods. In other words, I have a few food intolerances to such things as wheat, sugar, peanut butter, nuts, etc. I can eat any of these foods at anytime but when I eat a lot of any one of them over a couple days it results in a stomach ache and then a sinus headache that can last for a few days. I think the stomach ache causes an allergic reaction that causes my sinuses to swell that results in a sinus headache. I’m not a doctor….I just play one in my mind (haha)!
So this is what I do when I get one of the gastric/allergic sinus headaches. First I use a Neti Pot. This helps with my swollen sinuses. I might do this a couple times a day if my headache is really bad. I also try to eat as little as possible to get my gut to heal. Eating Brasco bone broth is a good way to let it rest and heal.
Today I tried an essential oil recipe I found on Pinterest. I massaged 2 drops each of frankincense, lavender and peppermint into teaspoon of coconut oil and applied to my forehead and sinuses. Make sure to be careful around the sensitive eye area. I could immediately feel the cool peppermint tingling on my face. This helped quite a bit. I only applied once as this was not a very bad headache but I think you could apply it throughout the day if you wanted to.
Peppermint: anti-inflammatory, used for headaches to relieve stress and tension, relieves stomach aches as well, opens sinuses and airways.
Frankincense: anti-inflammatory, helps with stomach aches and is an immune strengthener
Lavender: anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, helps during cold and flue season as well as allergies
I just wanted to shared these little tips to help any of you that might get such headaches. Do you use essential oils for your sinuses? Do you have any special blends? Please comment below as I would love to learn more and share all that I have done.
