Today I used the following kinds of candy that I bought at Dollar General. So this is not only an easy recipe it is also inexpensive. Below you can see what I used.

How to make homemade candy covered pretzels the easy way.
Step 1: Cover a baking or cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Get your ingredients ready by chopping or pounding the candy into small pieces. I like to put them in a baggie and use a meat mallet to crush them. Then add them to a big plate like below and set a side.
Step 2: Now make the chocolate coating. Get a microwaveable bowl and pour in the chocolate chips. I used semisweet chocolate chips but I think you could use milk or dark chocolate chips.
Microwave for 1 minute then take them out and look at them. If they look like the bowl below they are done. Otherwise heat in 30 second intervals until they are mostly melted. Once you stir them they will melt even more and you don’t want to over heat them.
Step 3: Place a pretzel into the chocolate chips and flip over using a fork. Then place on the parchment covered baking sheet. Sprinkle the candy over half of the pretzel and continue until all the pretzels are done.
Step 4: If you run out of chocolate, just add more chips and microwave for another minute and mix to melt. Amounts will vary depending on how much chocolate and candy you want on your pretzels.
Step 5: Let the pretzels sit for about an hour to make sure they are dry. Shake off the excess candy and store in an airtight container or package them for your gifts. (Please scroll down to print and view the recipe card.)
Other candy and coverings you can try with your pretzels.
I picked the candies that my family likes but you can play around with others. I would recommend using hard candy and not soft like licorice etc.
- Other candies to try: candy canes, m&ms, Kit Kats, Crunch bars, Twix bars, Snickers, etc.
- Other toppings to try: chopped nuts, sprinkles, cereal, seeds, cacao nibs, coconut, crushed cookies, etc.
- Other coverings to try: The pretzels with not only chocolate chips but any flavor of chips you can find. Sometimes I see peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips.
- You can flavor the chocolate with extracts like raspberry, cherry, almond, orange, peppermint, etc.
This really was an easy and fun homemade gift to make. If you have children they could easy do this with you. And they could be teacher’s gifts, or little gifts for other people you like to show your appreciation for. Enjoy!
