Recipe: Holy Turmeric Rice

June 16, 2014 by Denise 1 Comment

imageOk, so this rice isn’t really “holy” ….it’s more “holey” but that is how my DH always refers to it. He thinks he’s funny. I tell him it’s a good think he’s cute. 😉

This is the rice that I grew up with in all the Lebanese dishes my family made. It comes out perfect every time. It’s not complicated, but you have to use Uncle Ben’s long grain rice. It doesn’t work as well with other brands. At least not for me. Also you have to add turmeric to make it yellow. I don’t know why my family always adds turmeric,  but it is good for you and it’s what my mother and grandmother always did so I do too.

So next time you have a dish that calls for rice, try some Holy Rice with it. It’s easy, tasty and will add a little color to your meal.

Holy Turmeric Rice

This is a staple in our home. It's the rice I grew up with and the one my family loves. Use it in pilafs, stews or just add toasted pine nuts for a great side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Uncle Ben's Long Grain Rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, heat oil and rice for a minute or two. Add water and turmeric and bring to a boil.
  2. Once it starts boiling, cover and turn down heat to a medium low. In 20 minutes you will have "holy" rice.
