These grilled banana split kebabs are a fun dessert and perfect for a summer impromptu dinner with family and friends. Just add a scoop of ice cream and a bit of chocolate sauce and you are good to go! This grilled fruit kebabs make for an easy and healthy dessert that work great for camping trips as well.

My hubby and his friend built a big porch on the back of our house and it’s very nice. You can look out over the pool and the beautiful green hillside. However every summer he wants to invite friends or family over for an impromptu dinner just so we can eat and drink on his porch.
That’s all fine and dandy but I’m the one who has to shuffle around to find something to serve just hours before people come. So for today’s impromptu dinner I’ve made for you a fun little dessert; grilled banana split kebabs. I’ve always wanted to grill fruit plus it gets my hubby in on the cooking!
I also have for you some short cuts for impromptu summer get togethers.
My short cuts for an impromptu dinner party:
- For the drinks: I bought Pure Leaf bottled tea, Lemon Lemon Sparkling Lemonade and Izzy Fusions to make some light, refreshing drinks for my guests. I just added a bit of fruit and that’s it. You can use any premade iced tea and lemonade drinks you want as well as fruit like peaches, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, lemons, limes, oranges, etc.
- For the main dish: I bought Certified Angus Beef Gourmet Bacon Cheddar Burgers and then added a quick and easy spicy aioli sauce. See the recipe below. You can sometimes find premade gourmet burgers in the butcher section of a larger grocery store or sometimes in the freezer section.
- For a side dish: I bought a pasta salad at the deli and added fresh herbs. You can also try adding bacon and chives to a premade potato salad. Of course a big green salad is always useful but you can also find some cool bagged coleslaw mixes at Aldi such as Asian flavored or southwest flavored.
- For dessert: I made these easy fruit kebabs and topped them with Breyers Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream and chocolate sauce. Also I couldn’t resist buying Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies to make ice cream sandwiches for my son. (Every summer my whole family goes to the beach and my sister makes them for him.) So I made a few and kept them in the freezer for dessert too.
How to make grilled banana split kebabs.
Now let’s get to making the grilled fruit kebabs. I used pineapple, strawberries and bananas because they are what is traditionally in a banana split.
Step 1: Prep your fruit by slicing the strawberries in half lengthwise and cut the pineapple and banana in thick slices or chunks. Thread them on a wooden or metal skewer.
Step 2: Get a small bowl and add the oil and honey together. Then brush the mixture over the fruit kebabs. This well help them get some caramelization.
Step 3: Place the fruit kebabs on the hot grill and cook for a few minutes on each side just enough to get some grill marks and they the caramelization starts.
Once they are done to your liking, take them off the grill and place them on a platter for your friends to make their own sundaes. If you want you can just eat the kebabs as is. This would be great for a camping trip.
When assembling my banana split sundae, I like to keep the fruit on the bottom so the ice cream melts over it. Then I like to top the sundae with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and maraschino cherry. But you can make your sundae anyway you like.
Bacon cheddar burgers with spicy horseradish aioli.
And now let’s make our spicy aioli sauce for the gourmet burgers. Again I bought some Certified Angus Beef Gourmet Bacon Cheddar Burgers. These were some of the best burgers I’ve ever had. I ate mine without the bun because the aioli was delicious and low carb as was the burger.
To make the aioli, just mix the mayonnaise, horseradish and fresh garlic in a bowl and refrigerate until ready to eat.
The spicy horseradish recipe is: ½ cup Hellmann’s mayo + 1 tablespoon horseradish + 1 crushed clove of garlic
I’m going buy some more of the gourmet burgers and store them in the freezer! By the way I also have a jalapeño aioli recipe and a buffalo aioli recipe that would go great with these burgers.
Short cut fruity summer drink recipe.
These drinks were fun to make. Though they didn’t have any alcohol in them you could easily add a little vodka, tequila, rum or even white wine. I used a mixture of store bought lemonade and ice tea and then added some fresh berries.
And here is what I used for my drinks starting with Pure Leaf unsweetened green tea. I used 1 part green tea, 2 parts of either the Lemon Lemon Sparkling Lemonade (blackberry) or Izzy Fusions (lemon lime). I used lemons, limes and blackberries as well.
My son really liked the green tea and blackberry lemonade drink. But you can mix and match whatever brands you want. You can even use drink mix sticks like Crystal Light if you want.
1 part tea + 2 parts lemonade + fruit of your choice
One last short cut dessert for a summer party.
This was an impulse buy. I wanted to make ice cream sandwiches with chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream. You need to make these first thing and store in the freezer so they are ready for after dinner. They take an hour or two to freeze through.
I bought some Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies and Breyers Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream. Let the ice cream soften a bit to make your sandwiches and then wrap them in plastic wrap. Set in the freezer until dessert time.
You can use any kind of store bought cookies and ice cream you want. You can experiment with flavored ice creams and different kinds of cookies but I find that just simple chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream works great for most people.
Well I hope you give this grilled banana split kebab a try. It is super easy and fun for the summer. And try one of my other short cuts for an impromptu summer party. You can get all you need at most grocery stores. Let me know if you have any easy tricks to share as well in the comments. Enjoy!
