I have been having a cheesesteak obsession lately. My hubby and I love onions and peppers with just about anything so perhaps that is why. Today I was in the mood for an easy dinner recipe and threw together this low carb Philly cheesesteak skillet using ground beef instead of the usual steak.
It’s like a deconstructed cheese burger with peppers and onions. I ate it on a salad and hubby ate his with rice. It was delicious and took little time to make.

What Kind Of Ground Beef To Use.
When I was shopping at Giant Eagle, they had Certified Angus Beef® ground beef on sale. I chose the 85% ground beef because I wanted it to have some fat for flavor but did not want much excess grease.
If you have a preference for a fattier meat, just drain some of the grease out and if you want to use a leaner beef, you may need to add a bit more oil.
Let’s Make This Keto Cheesesteak Skillet Recipe.
In the photo below you can see the steps of how I made this easy dinner recipe.
STEP 1: Started with an oven safe pan and heat it up on the stove to a medium high heat. A cast iron skillet would work too. Add the ground beef and brown with some steak seasoning.
STEP 2: In the other skillet saute the vegetables (bell peppers, mushrooms and onions).
STEP 3: When both the ground beef and vegetables are done, mix them together and sprinkle the cheeses on top.
STEP 4: Set the pan under the broiler for about 5 minutes to melt the cheese and that’s it.
NOTE: You can saute all of the items in one pan from the beginning but I want to finish this as quickly as possible so I used two.
Notes & Recipe Tips
- You can play with the amounts of vegetables you use to lower the carbs. According to my nutritional calculator, 1 cup of each of the following vegetables have – green peppers (4.4g net carbs), sweet red peppers (5.9g net carbs), onions (12.2g net carbs) and mushrooms (1.6g net carbs).
- Different cheeses have different carbs counts. I wanted to use provolone and gruyere for the taste but you can use whatever kind of cheese you want. Some carb counts for 1 cup of cheese are: shredded mozzarella (2.5g), shredded gruyere (0.4g), shredded cheddar (1.4g) and 1 oz provolone slice (0.6g).
- While I used ground beef for this recipe, you could certainly use steak instead. I just thought ground beef would be less expensive and quicker to cook than steak.
- If you don’t have steak seasoning you can season with salt and black pepper or another season salt.
How To Eat This Ground Beef Cheesesteak.
First of all this is very tasty meal right out of the pan. I ate it for lunch like this. For dinner, I added it to a salad for a burger type salad.
You could also eat it with rice like my hubby or on a bun, both of which are not low carb but might be an option for other family members.
Well I hope you enjoy another low carb Philly cheesesteak recipe. If you like skillet dinners, I’m sure you will love this dish. Enjoy!

Susan
This was good and relatively quick to put together – but maybe I cheated a little b/c I had already food prepped over weekend all ingredients for this dish. I used mozeralla b/c it’s all I had. Fam enjoyed. I gave them rice with it and they ate on ciabatta rolls. I had mine no roll and no rice. Will definitely make again.
Denise
Hi Susan, so glad you liked it! It’s a simple recipe but tasty. Thanks for coming back to comment.
Sandra
I make a similar dish to this one using cauliflower and I love it. Must try your version.
Melissa
So I saw this recipe and thought it sounded pretty blah and honestly didn’t read the comments but made it anyway for lunch. I did everything by the recipe but added 2 decent sized cloves of garlic. I used Buc-ee’s steak seasoning if anyone is familiar (and from Texas!) and it was perfect. Really tasty! Didn’t feel deprived at all and ate it by itself. Thanks for the great recipe!
Denise
So glad you liked it Melissa! Thanks for coming back to comment and sharing your tips. It’s a simple recipe and can easily be adapted to your own tastes.

Denise
Hi Allison, so glad he likes it!
lorraine
Is it one cup each of the red, yellow and orange bell peppers or one cup total
Denise
Hi Lorraine, I’ve fixed the recipe. You are to use 1 cup total of the sweet peppers (yellow, red and/or orange) and 2 cups of the green peppers. The colored peppers have a couple extra carbs that I is why I just use one cup. However there really is much difference so if you wanted to use just the colored peppers that would be fine. But you want to use 3 cups of pepper strips total. Hope that helps!
Sandra
Found the link to this recipe on All Day I Dream About Food’s “Keto Ground Beef Recipes” last week. I made it last night and it was very well received….will definitely make again. (I only had red peppers and my cheeses were different but still delicious!) Thank you.

Barbara
I made this buy substituted the ground beef with thin steak ( for cheesesteaks) so good!!!!
Denise
Hi Barbara, I bet that was fantastic!
Lisa
I tweaked the recipe a bit to mimic a true Philly cheese steak. 3T white vinegar and 1 T worchestire sauce. It was awesome! Thanks fir the recipe.
Denise
Thanks for the tips Lisa! So glad you liked it.
Kim
How big is the serving size? Thanks! 😊
Denise
Hi Kim, I am just guessing on this because it’s hard to measure but I would say roughly 3/4 cup. I usually just see how much my family or I eat per serving and determine it this way. Based on the pan I used, we got 6 servings from it. Hope that helps!
Vicky
Saw this today and had to try it, Went straight to the store bought what I needed. Made it for supper, amazing!! Thank you!!!

Do you think this would taste as good with turkey meat instead of beef?
Denise
Hi Jennifer, I think it would be fine! The steak seasoning with help with that.
Trecia
What kind of steak seasoning do you use.
Denise
I use Montreal steak seasoning or Aldi brand of steak seasoning. Any kind would work.
Kristyn
So good! Made it without mushrooms, no one likes them. Best one I have found yet!

Cheesesteak is just something I’m always in the mood for! Like, for real — in any form, really! 😉 I love that you’ve made this low carb, and the suggestion of trying it on top of a salad sounds great!

We’re big fans of recreating a Fenway Park sausage and peppers at home so this is right up our alley! I love all that gooey cheese on top – it’s seriously speaking to me. The ground beef substitution for shaved steak is such a great idea because there’s always a pound of ground beef in our freezer and peppers in the produce drawer!
Daniela
Wowie I’m drooling thinking of this cheesesteak skillet! Never quite had something like this and super excited to try it :)!

This looks amazing – I love a good low carb skillet recipe. We just did our own Philly Cheesesteak low carb skillet but ours is completely different, I love the approach you took and those colorful peppers!
