These low carb tea pops are a healthy, tasty treat for a hot summer day. Easy to make and lots of delicious combinations for only 1.7g carbs per pop.
Recently I posted about my mission to make great popsicles. This was a result of the new popsicle molds I bought. Well I think I’m on to something here; using tea to make low carb, low calorie pops. As you may remember, I’ve made many recipes using tea in the past because it adds a lot of flavor without the calories. Now it’s time for me to use tea to make some delicious low carb tea pops.
In the winter I can sip up to 5 cups of hot tea a day. I bought this tea cup because I loved the colorful, floral pattern and the cute little spoon is a gift from my oldest sister. Just looking at these things brings me joy (KonMari style 😉 ). However in the summer I’d much rather drink iced tea and better yet, make it into a tasty frozen treat!
There are many reasons why I love using tea in recipes.
- I love mixing and matching tea flavors. For example you can mix any two or three fruit flavors to get a good tasting fruit punch. Or maybe mix peach and lemon ginger teas to make into ice cubes to use in a glass of green iced tea. Mint goes nice with any fruit tea, especially in the summer because it’s extra cooling. There are so many good combinations.
- Tea adds lots of flavor without the added calories or carbs.
- Drinking tea even has health benefits.
- Tea is very versatile. I have used tea in chicken soup, low carb cookies, smoothies, ice cubes, pops and fruity chia tea. In the summer time iced tea and tea pops are the way to go.
I’m sure if you’ve strolled down your local Walmart tea aisle you have seen a huge selection of tea to choose from. I used Bigelow tea today because once I saw the salted caramel my wheels started turning.
Last summer I made chai popsicles for my hubby. He loves chai (as do I) and it was a great little treat in the summer. Chai tea is full of spices and when I saw the Bigelow Vanilla Chai I thought what a great flavor to mix with other teas. Today I used Bigelow Vanilla Chai, Salted Caramel, French Vanilla and Perfectly Peach teas to come up with 3 delicious low carb tea pops. Let’s get to the recipes!
Vanilla Peach Tea Pop
For this pop, I added fresh, juicy, sweet peach slices since they are in season now. I only used 1/4 of the peach for all 5 pops so this little bit of fresh fruit would only add a few carbs. Almond milk has only a few carbs per cup and goes great with anything vanilla so I used it to add a bit of oomph to the pops. The teas I used were 2 bags of the French Vanilla black tea and 3 bags of the Perfectly Peach herbal tea to make 5 pops.
- Simmer the 5 tea bags in 2 cups almond milk for 5 minutes
- Cut up 1/4 of a fresh peach and add to 5 molds.
- Take out tea bags and add sweetener.
- Pour tea into molds and freeze for 3-4 hours
1 pop = 19 cals / 1.2g fat / 1.6g carbs / 0.5g protein
Super Vanilla Chai Tea Pop
This super Vanilla Chai pop was done the same way but did not have any fruit. I used 2 bags of French Vanilla again and 3 bags of Vanilla Chai. So the formula is about 5 tea bags per 2 cups of almond milk to make 5 pops. As for sweetener I like liquid stevia. You can use what ever sweetener you like best. Add it after the tea has brewed and taste to make sure your tea is sweet and strong enough. It’s better to have a stronger tea because once it’s frozen it dulls the taste a bit.
1 pop = 16 cals / 1.2g fat / 0.8g carbs / 0.4g protein
Creamy Salted Caramel Chai Tea Pop
This last tea pop is a little more involved but not much and it’s worth the extra effort. I used the Salted Caramel and Vanilla Chai along with cream and gelatin to give it a creamy consistency. This one was my favorite because of the creaminess. Next time I’m going to use the cream and gelatin with the other pops. See the recipe below.
1 pop = 182 cals / 18.4g fat / 1.7g carbs / 3.4g protein
So I hope you can see how tea offers so much flavor without adding calories or carbs. Try to experiment with mixing different flavors to make ice tea. When you get a combo you like, make it into ice cubes and popsicles like I’ve shown you here today. I hope you like them as much as I did. - 1 cup almond milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 Salted Caramel tea bags
- 3 Vanilla Chai tea bags
- 1 Tablespoon gelatin
- sweetener of choice
- Simmer teabags in almond milk for 5 minutes.
- Take out tea bags and add sweetener of choice.
- Add gelatin to tea mixture and whisk until the gelatin is dissolved.
- Add to a blender along with the cream and blend on high.
- Taste to make sure it is sweet enough.
- Pour into molds and freeze for 3-4 hours.
- Each pop has 1.7g carbs.
